I have an Unlocked and Jailbroken iPhone 3GS v 4.1. I have been told I can upgrade to v5.1 and still unlock and jailbreak but I would lose all my data. The phone would go back to it's original position. What I want to know if it is possible to back up all my data and programs.upgrade and then reinstall without causing the phone to lock. Any ideas?

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by "custom IPSW".

One of the first places you might want to check out is iClarified.com. It has a wealth of info regarding jailbreaks & unlocking iPhones.

As for the "custom IPSW", that is a customized Apple iPhone firmware file. It is usually made with RedSn0w or Pwnage Tool for the Mac (not sure of the ones for Windows). You use those apps to customize the IPSW file, so that when you restore your iPhone with the custom IPSW file, you don't upgrade your baseband in the process (newer basebands don't allow you to unlock your iPhone).

So head on over to the web site above, and do a little reading. You should be good to go.
