My 14PM's automatic iCloud backup has stopped working. (though I can backup manually).
Is there a way get it to automatically backup again? I'm running iOS 17.5.1.

If there’s ever a break in the internet connection, even just for a second, the backup will fail.
I’ve experienced many backup failures in the past with older iPhones. Don’t assume that the problem is on your end. My problem wasn’t an iOS version issue either.

The problem is that when I do them manually they always backup successfully. For some reason the "automatic backup" stops initiating. I don't know if turning it off, then back on will fix it, but I'm apprehensive to do so in case it messes things up in iCloud.

Update to 17.6.1 and see if that changes things. Apple don't always write what bugfixes the updates contain and who knows, this might be one of them.
I remember when my automated backups failed a while back every once in a while but realized that it had to do with my router settings, I had scheduled an automatic reboot a few times a week and it sometimes collided with the backup.

17.6 contain a pack up updates and so try that first if you feel apprehensive to turn backup off and on.

Could it be carrier related?

I think it's more of my location. I'm down in a valley which does not help! :(
Still, if you have good 4G/5G coverage so that you can do a manual backup it should be enough for an automatic I guess. Not sure how much new/changed data that your device needs backup up every night, but I guess most users have fairly small incremental/differential backups done.

They do write that it can be carrier specific, but at the same time it doesn't sound likely if you can do a manual.
But just for the sake of trying something to see if it makes any difference, do a carrier update (if possible) and install the latest iOS version. They do contain a pile of bugfixes but more important, highly recommended security updates.
