I plugged my iphone 5 in my laptop and installed the latest version, then after this it has just completely froze, i can't turn it off or anything, the only thing that works is siri - also it is getting very very hot

It doesn't, its completely unresponsive... although I can flick between screens and the battery and clock still works.
I will take it into apple tomorrow I think

alright well its not responding how it should, the screen flicks between pages, the battery and clock symbols are accurate, and siri responds but I don't see it on the screen. None of the apps will load and i cant lock or switch it off

I don't really know how to do any of that if im honest, although I have tried plugging it in my laptop - no luck
I live very close to an apple store anyway so will pop in with it tomorrow

I'd suggest doing that before going into the Apple Store, they have enough people to deal with as is.
