Do you have multiple calendars on your iPhone (such as 'school', 'home', 'work') etc? If so, check that you have a default calendar set: Tap Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Tap Default Calendar. Select a Calendar - for example 'Home'. Open the Calendar app and try to schedule an event. Cheers! RTP.

Have you tried restarting your iPhone? (Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button, Slide to Power off, then Press Sleep/Wake again to restart it). Is your iPhone jailbroken? Cheers, RTP.
