Last week, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple camera lens suppliers Genius Electronic Optical had discovered issues with cracking coatings on the wide-angle camera lens destined for the lower-end 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 12‌ models. Kuo noted that the issue was unlikely to have an impact on the iPhone 12 shipping schedule.

Genius Electronic Optical has since refuted the report, maintaining that its production is still running without issues and that demand from its clients remains normal, according to DigiTimes. In any case, Apple also has Largan Precision as a camera lens supplier for iPhone 12 models, so customers are unlikely to see any impact regardless.

Apple is widely expected to announce four ‌iPhone 12‌ models this year, including a 5.4-inch model, two 6.1-inch models, and a 6.7-inch model, all with OLED displays and 5G connectivity. While new iPhones usually begin shipping in late September, Apple recently indicated that supply will be available "a few weeks later" this year.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple's largest manufacturing partner Foxconn commenced its seasonal hiring spree to assist with iPhone 12 production.

Cunningham's Law states "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer."

Kuo's wrongness elicited an Apple supplier to reveal something.

Kuo is probably wrong... he gets quoted a lot, but per usual there is rarely an article showing whether his track record is glowing or trash. Usually it seems, the closer to the actual release his info maybe more relevant, otherwise I think its a toss up..
He is wrong a lot, the only time he is correct is when he says Apple will release new iPhones in September with faster processor better cameras and battery. Guy is always wrong

Don’t know why people think this guy is good, no one ever mentions how wrong he is with his quarterly predictions, he was so far off he doesn’t do it anymore.

Did they deny that there were ever any coating issues, or just saying that the production delivery times are still good?

Hey Joe, MR's iPhone 12 roundup does NOT cover the expected DRAM upgrade for the two "Pro" models.

Both should include ~6 GB of LPDDR5 DRAM, vs ~4 GB of LPDDR4 DRAM in the other iPhone 12 models.

ALSO, NO mention of possible upgraded image sensors !

The Back Super-Wide is almost certainly getting an upgrade !

The Back Telephoto "should" ALSO get an upgrade, as it's long overdue ! ... here, ideally, Apple would scale it down from 12 Mpx to 10 Mpx, & use the extra space for BIGGER pixels !

The Back Wide is good to go !

The 12 Mpx front on the iPhone 11 models is OK as is.

And BTW, Smart HDR enhancements generally require image sensors with FASTER data rates !

In other words, for that reason alone Apple may be forced to upgrade the (relevant) sensors.

LPDDR5 DRAM is the single-most over-looked topic in iPhones today !

It has the potential to make a HUGE "immediate" impact with High-Perf CPU-based Apps !

Ready-to-Go Burst Photography camera apps are just one (good) example.

Recommend MR start a thread/article titled "Will the two iPhone 12 "Pro" models include LPDDR5 DRAM ?".

Who to believe?

  • Marketing arm of Genius Electronic Optical?
or
  • Kuo, a credible analyst with over a decade of accurate predictions?

2017 - Kuo predicts no Touch ID on 2017 OLED iPhone and 6.1" LCD coming in 2018 (half of the Internet disagrees)
2018 - Kuo predicts death of 3D Touch in 2019 (mouth breathers claim that's impossible)
2019 - Kuo predicts the frame of the 2020 iPhone will have a "similar design to iPhone 4" (essentially confirmed)
2020 - Kuo predicts periscope lens won't appear until 2022

What is that saying that "even a broken clock is right twice a day?"

Hmm... "production is still running without issues and demand from clients remains normal" sounds exactly like what a manufacturer that has production issues and lower demand from clients would say... o_O

It also sounds like something a manufacturer without issues and with normal demand from clients might say.

Been saying this for years but people seem to think he's an analyst god or something. He just tosses whatever on the wall and hope that it sticks, then changes his prediction when it gets closer to release and by that time, mostly confirmed info have been leaked already. But MR seems to continually praise him so they can get the traffic.

Hold on a sec, Kuo is not a mudslinger. Can you name any other analyst that had the inside documented information that he has posting a year sometimes, even longer in advance about product releases? Nobody’s even touched him in that realm before. Obviously he has inside connections with suppliers, but he definitely doesn’t just ‘toss things around‘. He’s been wrong, but he’s been right Way more than he has been wrong. In terms of tech sites that reports Apple related info, there’s a reason you see his name plastered on main page articles for years. He’s the pinnacle of being a legit source. It’s. Its not just Macrumors, plenty of sites use his source material. I think you’re not educated enough on his credibility background personally.

In the middle of several books.
The lense manufacturer didn’t deny the alleged cracking. They just stated production was on schedule. One way or another, we will find out in a few months what the truth is. And before we do know truth, many here will denounce Apple and vow to never buy the 5.4” phone because it is defective etc.

Cue the doom and gloom for Apple rhetoric.
