iPhone + Canada, Apple actually thinking about us!

I just received an e-mail from iTunes asking me to complete a iTunes Survey. I thought why not and gave it a try, to my surprise they had 2 iPhone questions.

#1. Are you aware of the iPhone?

#2. Will you get one when it comes to Canada?


This is for all of you that have lost hope for a Canadian iPhone launch, they haven't forgotten about us! So hang it, there is light at the end of the tunnel..

The rest of the survey was all about iTunes, how often you use it and what you would change about it.

As much as I would love to get an unlocked one, I just would like to wait for the real deal to come up here... I'm in Van and know people that sell them, but just want to hold off.

I'm still not convinced since Rogers is such a dick of a company and is probably going to either:
a) never release it, or
b) charge insane rates.

Apple probably is using the survey as leverage in the negotiations with
Rogers.

Also I think the delay in Canada has everything to do with Rogers and little to do with Apple.

i think it has to do with apple, but its because of rogers
i think apple wants rogers to offer better rate plans and rogers is holding off cus they wont change them

Yeah it seems like all the pieces are starting to fall into place for the iPhone... I really hope it's soon, or in June/July when they launch a 3G model.

I was under the impression that the 3G model could likely be released on Feb. 26 with the iPhone SDK and MBP update. I also have a strong feeling that when the 3G iPhone is released in the USA, it will also be released in Canada. Also, I think that we Canadians will be forced to use AT&T for the time being, as the pending contract between Apple and Rogers has had many conflicts and delays. One of the many 'road blocks' associated with that hassle is Rogers' obsession to have their brand name printed on every phone they sell..

I'm in the same spot. I don't understand why anyone in Canada gets the unlocked ones when the rates are so awful. Why get a dodgy phone that is going to cost you three times what the iPhone will cost if it ever comes up here for real?

Not really though.

Locked phones are standard in North America, not the exception. Revenue sharing is based on the idea that there is a software "subscription" (also nothing really unusual there.) And it's Apple that is pushing for a decent flat-rate price that doesn't gouge the customers, not the carriers.

The only reason the iPhone is not in Canada is Rogers doesn't want to allow cheaper rates. It's just too bad there is no alternative up here. Competition is always the first thing that even died-in-the-wool capitalists are ready to throw out for the sake of "business." Bunch of hypocrites really.

AT&T's 3G network isn't in place in the U.S. yet. It should be ready to go by the end of 2008.

Rogers is increasing fees for "essential" services next month including on stuff like call display.. which is stupid. But I'm paying just over $50/month for lots of services.. so I'm somewhat happy

The 3G network is still in the beginning stages, cities over 250k have 3G, but areas such as along rural areas of the Trans Can don't have 3G towers yet, my hometown of 40k only has EDGE service.

If I put my sim card in from my current cell phone (on a Rogers plan, voice only, no data) am I stuck only using wifi for the internet? Are any canadians using rogers with their iphone, and accessing the web and email with a rogers data plan? If so, what are the costs and options?

I have owned an iPhone since they dropped in price. There is no reason to wait for the canadian release. Just buy one from the US and unlock it yourself (will take you about 20 minutes to learn how to do it and do it), then add the new $7 unlimited browsing and you are set. I am with Fido (owned by rogers) and love it.

As far as I know, the $7 unlimited data plan does NOT apply to Iphones... you my friend may be getting one massive phone bill this month.

Actually, one of the big reasons people buy and unlock the iPhone here is BECAUSE the data rates are awful. See...we have terrible data rates here, and Rogers wants to make damn sure people use the data plans anyway, so there weren't any Wi-Fi phones here at all when I got my iPhone (Rogers just got the HTC Touch recently after Bell started carrying it, but that's the only Wi-Fi phone they have at the moment AFAIK). Being able to use Wi-Fi here in Canada, where it's pretty prevalent in the cities beats the hell out of paying a dollar a megabyte (and that's a deal for Canada, sadly, without a data plan or when you go over it's about $50/MB).

Right now, I'm using a promotional data plan from Fido (4 months UD, then it drops down to 12MB/mo, at which time I'm disabling EDGE). Unfortunately, this plan isn't available anymore, it got replaced by that garbage "unlimited" WAP browsing only plan. I'm hoping someone is able to do some T-Zones style WAP proxy hack on this plan sometime soon, because it doesn't look like we'll be seeing a legit UD plan for a while.
