iPhone Carrier Settings Update?

So, I just plugged in my iPhone to sync, and iTunes gave me a message:

"An update to the carrier settings for your iPhone is available. Would you like to download it now?"

What do carrier updates consist of? For what it's worth, I have AT&T.

Why?

I plug in to the computer when I read about an update around here or if I need to add photos, music, or movies to the phone.

Using those criteria, I probably sync the phone every 10 days or so. If I hadn't seen the posts about this update last week, I doubt I would have found out about it on my own by now.

Why do I need the carrier update? I got it just because I was bored. What does it do for me at the moment? Nothing.

So why should I plug in my phone more often? To get updates that do nothing sooner?
