I always charge via the wall charger whilst the phone is on airplane mode. Works well for me.

I do not want to unplug and replug in the cradle all the time (from computer to wall wart and back)... just want it to work simply. And now it does!

The problem is you really want your computer to go to sleep so that it uses less electricity and is better for the computer.

What I did was to buy an extra cable ($29) that I use when I want to Sync with the computer (less often then charging) and I use the cradle with the wall plug for charging. I considered just getting a second cradle but the cost was $49 so I went with the $29 cable only.

Draining

I had a similar expierence, so I started doing some research on what was going on. It turns out while the iPhone and the computer are synced, they are communicating with each other. When the computer goes in sleep mode, the iPhone thinks it is the problem and tries to reconnect. It continues to do so until it does. This takes a lot of power to do. I read that 1.1.3 fixed that problem.

I don't think that would be the issue, but maybe. however there were problems with some of the usb connections on the docks. I'd call Applecare and have them trouble shoot for you. Maybe try charging without the dock. See what happens.

Actually there's a specific warning about just that on the Apple site regarding sleeping or off computers draining the device.

It's good you solved your problem. For others interested, I have 3 usb cables and 2 plug in adapters (the extras were maybe $5 off ebay). I really only use the cradle for the audio out to sync to my tv (for synced podcast commentaries).

I have a cable plugged into the wall in my bedroom for nighttime charging (it's my alarm clock), I have a cable at work hooked to my computer for charging during the day (if needed), and a cable at my home computer for syncing. I don't use the cradle at any of these locations, because of the case I have my iphone in.

The only time I use airplane mode (except on an airplane) is when we're syncing audio on the tv. We get a buzz in the speakers otherwise. I turn off wi-fi in the car, because it seems to interfere with the bluetooth connection of the car. Otherwise, with multiple charging options, it doesn't seem to run down that fast.

Oh, and the extra plug in adapter is in the living room, where I charge the phone when I'm watching videos from the iphone on the tv.

I'm starting to think this phone has taken over my life...

But means you wont receive any calls through the night. I know most people dont want to be disturbed while they're sleeping but in case of an emergency

Me too. I always leave my phone right next to my alarm clock so I leave it on airplane mode so I don't get calls when I'm sleeping, and it also eliminates the BUZZ BZ BZ BZ BZ BZZZZZZZZZZZ sound that it makes next to the alarm clock. :D

In June, for an extra $150 on top of your $400+ for your new one....you can say by-by to the famous BUZZ BZ BZ BZ BZ BZZZZZZZZZZZ and get your beauty sleep :D

When I go to bed the iPhone is put in airplane mode, if it needs a charge I always have the wall charger plugged in w/ a cable connected to it. When I'm syncing - once a week, I put a full charge in it with the dock and another USB iPhone cable I have, but I always have it connected to a powered USB hub and that eliminates my reliance on my MacBook staying awake... Those are worth the $19 investment http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=357371 Works great with any usb accessory and charges them when a computer is not even connected!
