Who the heck actually uses IM on their phone. Actually who the heck still uses AIM anyway?
Well obviously you don't and I don't know much about AIM. However, a lot of people in companies use IM to keep in touch with employees or to communicate. Yes they do it on their mobiles as well. My sister, girlfriend and best friend all use it on their mobiles. They're all professionals and use it.

Oh and none of them use SMS. Well that's not entirely true. They use it, but not often. They prefer IM.

So what is your impression of the Helio service?

The service has been good (at least no worse than Sprint which was better than T-mo and Cingular for me) also I was told we roam on Verizon's network which is kind of nice. Customer service was not that good at the beginning, but working at Best Buy (at the time) I got the name and number of some higher ups (from our sales rep) and got things taken care of. I have not had to call in a few months and when I did they took care of me. I think when they came out their phones had some innovative features/ideas, but now they seem to be like everything else out there. My friend is getting his Ocean today so I can't wait to see how that is.

Both Sprint and Verizon suck more than a Home Improvment vamped up vacuum cleaner.

I was with Sprint from 1998 until last year. They screwed with me SO bad. I dropped more calls than a centerfielder using a seanet to catch flyballs. They also lost all my contacts on my then $350 Samsung A800 and no way to recover. That's when I walked right down the block and transferred to Cingular and got my SLVR. I was then able to sync my contacts via bluetooth with my Mac, update my phone, etc. I think I only dropped 3 calls since last year. Hell, when I called customer service with Cingular, it was a pleasant experience, as was the past 3X I called this week with iPhone questions. Sprint/Verizon? Couldn't bothered with me when I called. One of the WORST was when I had FiOS installed in my apt. Not only did Verizon just not show up the first appointment, but when they finally did, they were clueless with an 8hr visit. I've heard horror stories about their wireless customer service as well.

So it's no suprise to me that Sprint/Verizon are scared so bad their pants weigh 10lbs more each day...
Oh come on...FiOS is an awesome service, just because you had one bad experience doesn't mean the entire company is worthless. I've had two bad experiences Apple's phone support...but I still love their products :)

300 to 400 charges

So 300 to 400 charges for the iPhone Battery. That's only a year and a half or less. I still wish it could be swapped out. So when it dies you lose your phone for a few days? With an iPod that's fine but with a phone?

I love what I've read but I think revision 2 is for me next year.

Where did you get this numbers from?

Personally, the only points that I'd find disappointing about the iPhone are

  1. No MMS
  2. The phone only has a 2MP camera with no flash. That just doesn't cut it for a high end phone. My K800i which came free with my contract has a 3.x MP camera with a pretty good flash

Now I know the camera doesn't matter to some, but I've kind of got used to having it over the years and it can be pretty useful. And I find that times I tend to use it most, really benefit from having a flash.

IM would have been nice, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Similarly the lack of 3G support is a disapointment but I don't know how widespread 3G is in the US.

Other than that most of the points seem fairly spurious. Mind, I do hope that they have MMS and 3G and a better camera by the time it comes to Europe.

Agreed, at least two of those issues need to be addressed for a UK/Europe launch, although I will say the camera aint half bad for good light situations. Flash would solve any low light problems of which it certainly has...

I don't know about this it doesn't seems like it's an official VZW document. I think this because there's no period in the second "iPhone box" or in the eighth ""VZW box" Also the top boxes say "Why VERIZON WIRELESS?" and "iPhone" They don't seem consistent.

Agreed. There are a number of typos, and the "tone" of the document is far too informal for a document of this type. I wouldn't be surprised if this document was developed by someone at an individual store, but I doubt very much that it came from Verizon corporate.

Here are the valid arguments:

1) No IM - some people require IM for business, some people require it for their social life

2) No removable battery - yes, the battery lasts hella long on a charge and will be more than sufficient for most people. But some people, such as international travelers, may often not be near a useable AC outlet for several days

3) Slow EDGE data service - this is obviously valid, but it is offset by wifi and by other carriers having serious weaknesses in their own ways as well

Not being able to swap out batteries is a bit of a pain. There are times when many need to swap out a dead battery with a fresh one and recharge later. Also, why on earth cannot you use any MP3 as a ring tone??!?

Different songs playing when someone calls you.

It's a really lame feature that I hate anyway.

Its there so that when you are with your girlfriend and then your wife calls, you don't need to even take the time to check out caller ID.

RE: songid. Are you serious about that? I don't have that on my phone.. I have the song-caller-id thing (which I don't use)

Yes, this is true. They used to make you pay everytime you used the id function, but I heard that it is now free( +Minutes). Its just a way to get you to download an overpriced ringtone or song to your phone. 1.99 per song!! WTF.

Higher cost of Verizon and Sprint

Pointing to a few short comings does not prove they have a better, more usable product. All reviewers said iPhone as an overall package is a superior product.

By the way, Watch your wallet, you’ll pay more by using Verizon and Sprint with their poor choices of phone offerings.

Verizon:
- Voice and data Plans start at $80 per month.
- Every "feature" costs extra $$ per month
- Disallows syncing your contact list from your computer via bluetooth (as of early 2007, not sure if they changed)
- To sync with computer you have to go through their service and pay them a monthly fee

Sprint:
- $50 per month for blackberry email and web access only. Voice calls are per minute. Long distance calls are double the price of the per minute calls. Otherwise their BASIC voice plan with 200 minutes is $30/month which adds to $80 per month minimum.

For both Verizon and Sprint, you’ll be paying a minimum of $20 extra per month, for 24 month contract. So you will actually be paying an extra $480 ($20x24), on top of what they charge for their “smart” phone ($100-$400).

That’s not including the monthly fees they charge for their “features.” In addition, that cost does not include the amount of time for a person to learn figure how to do things in unintuitive ways on poorly designed devices.

But all these phones come with crap plastic lenses! You get more Megapixels, you just get to see the limitations of your camera optics bigger!

Samsung has a 10MP (or something ludicruous) cameraphone. I can see specks of dirt on my 6MP DSLR with a 50mm/F1.4 lens. A higher resolution plastic lens with my fingerprint on it is going to give me a good picture? I don't think so.

Unless you are buying a BB Sprint is cheaper than AT&T. Of course Sprint doesn't have the iPhone. I actually wonder, if Wiki's customer base numbers are correct, why didn't Apple ask Sprint, hmm.

Still, the iPhone has shortcomings they can try and take advantage of.

The problem for them is that every few days or so Apple chips away at one of the major complaints. "The battery life sucks"; turns out it is the best in the market. "The screen will scratch easily like all those iPods"; Apple puts in glass, and everyone who has actually used it really praises it. "No way that keyboard can work"; once again, everyone that has actually used it replies differently.

And virtually every other complaint (VPN, Exchange support, etc.) may already be there or is just a software update away. Every time you sync your iPhone, it can get better.

Im not sure its desperation, more just good business sense.

You are right in that it is good business sense to come up with a response for those few customers that will come into their stores over the next several days asking them if they have the iPhone :p, but I bet they don't go this far for every other competing phone on the market. The iPhone buzz and level of mindshare is phenomenal, and I bet the competitors are feeling overwhelmed right now.

they should have mentioned the outrageous price tag for a freaking phone.

If you compare the IPHONE to other cell phones... yah... its expensive.

If you compare the IPHONE to other smartphones... then... is it more expensive?

Compare the iphone to the right product.

Its like saying WOW... that macbook pro is SO expensive compared to my 300 dollar cell phone....

Untill apple fixes the last two points, i will not look at realistically getting the iphone. :( No removable battery is just being greedy on apple's part, sure it lasts 8 hrs, but i'm also sure in a matter of 6months-1year it will last half that if anything... ontop of that i always have 2 spares, one kept in my car, and one in my briefcase. It's not realistic to think i can charge it anytime i want.

slow edge is definitely a problem, especially if the area i am around doesn't have alot of hotspots. How can a device that is so reliant on data service offer such a slow information gateway.

the im thing is also a bit being greedy imo, and wanting people to use texting, but since they offer unlimited texting on their plans, i guess that would be somewhat alright.

obviously this phone is defiantly offering a new gateway and steps up a legaue in the phone market, but in terms of completeness, i definitely don't think apple has got it quite yet. But than again, neither did the ipod in its first model, and it's doing just fine now...
