Can anyone tell me what determines the Compilation list on my iPhone (6)? I see songs that are (a) not compilations and (b) are not synced in iTunes. Many of them were purchased through iTunes, but I disabled syncing purchased songs with my iPhone.

All compilation boxes are unchecked. I think I figured it out, though. For a time I was syncing purchased music to the cloud. I found I had less control over how the songs were stored and decided to keep them all on an external drive. There is a setting, "Show all music," that appends music downloaded to the iPhone (through the manual sync I do through iTunes) with, presumably, songs from the cloud. When I unchecked it the erroneous compilations disappeared.
