In my iPhone calendar, every event is in there twice.

In the address book however, all contacts appear just once, except when I search for contacts with spotlight or I type their names in the SMS app, they all show up twice (so they are duplicates as well)

Does anyone know what to do?

I noticed this the other day myself and was looking for a solution, not sure if your dupes are for the same reason though. I have mobileme, and both mobileme and my iphone sync with outlook on my PC. Because my contacts were set to "All", i was seeing both contacts twice. I Noticed a groups button when in Contacts, top left, that will take me to the contact groups (which I previously didn't know I had), and selected my mobileme group. Problem solved, because the group you choose in contacts will be used util you change it, even when pulling contacts into SMS or emails- and since mobile is handling the synching, this is the only one that is needed. If you have other contact groups, like from Exchange, it might not be this simple to fix.

Also, if you do have mobileme, you can delete your mobileme account under mail settings, then add it back, and select "merge with outlook" when given the choice. Then you will have one contacts list, calendar, etc.

I used to have MobileMe but cancelled my trial yesterday ... I wasn't aware of the problem at the time.

So right now, I'm just syncing to my Mac, but it seems the MobileMe entries are still in there ... would it be my best bet just to delete all duplicates manually then?

    Solution

    I got the idea here:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090617052238509

    1. If you have an Exchange or MobileMe account, go into that account in Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars.
    2. Turn "OFF" the item(s) you're having issues with (calendars and/or contacts)
    3. DELETE the items from your iPhone.
    4. Wait for the action to be performed
    5. Turn "ON" the item(s) you turned off in #2.
    6. DELETE the items from the iPhone when it asks.
    7. Enjoy singularity!
