contact capacity

i was about to buy an iphone (3G 16GB) yesterday from ATT. Sales people said, after trying, they could not load my palm treo 650 contacts (about 5000) into iphone because of limited memory of iphone. i questioned where 16 GB went and they said not in contacts. I really need these contacts and can't use a PDA without them. I am surprised that my treo, with MB of data can handle them but not iphone. Maybe att was wrong. I hope so, but can find no info on this from apple.

 I have a little over 3300 contacts on my Palm Pilot and experienced almost no issues with sending them to Outlook and my first generation 16 gig iPhone. Half the contacts have extensive information contained in the "note" section of the contact. There does appear to be a limit on how much information can be placed there. Some of my contacts show only half the date that was originally contained in the Palm Pilot. One solution is to divide an entry (contact) into two portions. I'm not sure if a new iPhone with a larger capacity would provide a solution. Any ideas?

2799 with multiple numbers, emails each plus notes (not all of them)

running smooth. mobileme syncs them fine over iphone and work/home computers

3GS 32gb. on the previous 3G 16gb or even the 3G 8gb I had no problems (except for lag lol )

Iphone and contacts

I appreciate all the responses. Thank you.

Well, I posted the thread in early June. Since then i got the iPhone3Gs. The ATT sales person was wrong. Sure it holds the 5000 or so names (mostly business... if it were friends i could reduce the names to two, including mine.) probably hold many more.

The notes, though are another story.... I have not checked but i think it doesnt synch them all over. I need to check this out. Thanks for bringing it to my attemtion.

On another note- I noticed many of the apps cannot synch unless both computer and iPhone are on the same wireless network: cable synch is impossible.

And speaking of Palm: I loved Agendus for the Palm. But it sucks for the iPhone and is a waste of money!

I have just under 4300 total contacts with multiple number in most of them. I first synced my 32G 3GS and they were all transferred, no problem. I then took out some of the groups as they were not necessary to be on my iPhone.

So to summarize, if all my contacts were on there originally, it shouldn't have no problem storing up to the capacity of open memory.

Right. The ATT Store sales person was wrong. I have no problem holding 5k contacts. I havent looked to see if notes w/ contacts transfer.

I can't answer your question offhand, but I just wanted to say Holy Cow. Why so many contacts?

well I know I have a mere 2000 contacts and so until today my quest for an address book that provided enough contact storage, I was stuck with this M*&^^^ F&c(**$ BALCKBERRY.

oh my 2000 contacts must have something to do with the front page of the business section of the St Pete Times in 2007, Nov 19th. That paper sold extra copies all week. and the story ran on the radio and all sorts of yahoo news and tbt newspaper in Tampa and omg my friends family and ophthalmologist and everyone in Tampa bay got a real good look at me and wanted my info.

what do you think. A google of my name tells everything. A google search of images shows me 6 times on page one. And so it go with fame a lot of phone numbers. OF course I only keep the ones that call more than once.

Didn't read thru every post, but if your iPhone didn't sync your outlook you can choose what you want to sync in iTunes.

So, would you like a cookie or something? Maybe a full pie?

The iPhone is amazing with storage and not burning out. I've owned multiple blackberries an they couldn't handle the work load. Emails texts calls and various other messengers being open at the same time. I currently have about 1800 contacts and the phone works just as well as it did the day I purchased.
iPhone is the most dependable cell I have owned
