I have been using the dictation feature to take notes on my newly acquired iPhone 4S. After pressing the little mic button once, a bell will ring once, and it will ring once again when the dictation mic button is pressed again, but out of the blue, it now dings 5 times when I end the dictation, and I don't have the foggiest idea why. I might have changed a setting, but I cannot imagine which one. And even more oddly, it's doing it with all apps except the search that opens when you swipe the screen fast (I cannot think of the name of it, but it's the one where you can search anything, including the iphone) where it rings only once. I would be grateful for any insight. It's running iOS 9.3.5.

Thought I'd bump this to see if fresh eyes have any insight. I tried powering off the phone, and this did not help. Perhaps a more general question is in order. Is it common for iphones to occasionally suffer anomalies or peculiar behavior like this?

Maybe update you 5 to the latest iOS?
9.3.5 is the latest for iPhone 4s.

The iPhone 4s and iOS 9 are outdated so it's very possible that you may run into some issues with it. I suggest trying Reset All Settings or restoring from a backup.

Thanks. I'll keep that as a reserve plan. If one does a reset, are apps that do not come with iOS (i.e., those downloaded by the user) deleted, or do they remain?

No, that would happen if you erase the device (which would allow you to restore from backup if you have one). A reset only resets the settings. You can find both options in Settings > General > Reset.

O.K. thanks for the reply.
