So I have an odd issue. At home, I have only 1 bar with my provider Verizon. I have WiFi calling enabled on my iPhone 15 Pro max, iOS 17.4 and also calls on other devices to allow incoming calls to also ring on my iPad, and Mac. Every day, without fail, the first incoming call of the day I get, will not come through. So I usually get an iMessage (not sms) from 1 of 2 of the people that call me in the am asking why I’m not answering my phone. Now I never receive any call.

I notice that if I attempt to make the first outbound call of the day, it will 100% fail the first time. I have to enable and disable airplane mode to “re-register” my iPhone on the network or something. Once I do this, if any pending SMSs messages hadnt come in, they suddenly come in.

So the issue I’ve noticed, I won’t receive the very first sms or voice call of the day, until I trigger airplane mode.

Today, I tried to log into my bank app first thing in the am. They sent me a sms authentication code but I didn’t get it. Until I realized the bug. I triggered airplane mode and the 3 codes the bank had sent me, all came in at once along with a voice mail from the bank from their security system.

I’ve noticed so long as I make calls every now and then throughout the day, I’ll “stay” on the network but if too many hours goes by without my using the network, I.e only using iMessage OR FaceTime, then I’ll be booted off.

Any ideas anyone? I know calling into Verizon tech support will probably lead nowhere

When did this pattern start? You mention you are running iOS 17.4 beta, so I would try the following possible remedies:

1) Try a hard restart for your iPhone;

2) Check for carrier updates through Settings > General;

3) Reset your network settings;

4) Install iOS 17.4 public release when it comes out, most likely tomorrow, 4 March. Since you have been running a beta, I would do a clean install with IPSW.

5) If the suggestions above fail, get a replacement SIM card. A few years ago, I had some weird carrier issues that were solved by replacing the SIM card.

Yes, the OP could also ask Verizon to try and “reset” the line from their end.

I am in the same boat as you; I get 1 bar of signal at home on Verizon and rely on Wi-Fi Calling.

I haven't noticed the same issue as you with regards to missing calls or calls failing, but I have noticed on both my phone and my wife's that following the update to iOS 17 at large, our phones will randomly drop off Wi-Fi Calling for a few seconds at a time (jumping from VZW WiFi to Verizon then coming back).

It happens at random, and I haven't been able to find any pattern to it; it seems to happen whether the phone is locked/idle or in use. I believe what's happening is that the IPSec tunnel that Wi-Fi Calling uses is dropping for some reason, but I'm not sure why. Nothing has changed on my network, and my work laptop has no problem staying connected to it's VPN connection all day.

Have you tried putting your phone in airplane mode and turning on Wifi to force the connection to Wi-Fi Calling? I know this works to allow me to force MMS to send over wifi when it's being stubborn and failing otherwise, which happens occasionally for me. Might be worthwhile as a troubleshooting step...
