Well... up until now everything has been so intuitive I've never had a need to ask. But now there's a display indicator on my wife's iPhone 3G that I can't figure out for the life of me.

And I can't find ANYTHING online nor a graphic of possible display indicators. Hopefully one of you will know what it is.

Top right hand corner-- right next to the bluetooth and battery strength meter-- there's a little graphic of what looks to be a telephone handset ontop of a keyboard.

What the hell is it/what does it mean? And-- if necessary-- how do we turn it off? Thanks!

The iPhone user manual lists all symbols, including the one you are referencing.

It's the TTY phone symbol. Go to settings --> phone --> TTY (you want to turn it off, unless you purposely want it on!). It assists with telecommunications for deaf individuals.
