never in my life will I put a government document that I'm required to show to law enforcement on a whim on my phone
This would not be “on a whim”, it would be a simple conscious choice to have enable a more secure and private way of doing age verification than handing over one’s physical ID that is easily scanned by someone who is acting illegally (by scanning and storing customer’s IDs for nefarious purposes). With digital ID, an establishment that only needs proof of age, is only given a verification that one is over the required age, as opposed to getting all the information on one’s driver’s license.

For more info on what happens behind the scenes when used, at least from what I've seen online, the Digital ID has the picture taken of the front & back of the physical ID along with a Live Photo of yourself to match against. This is verified and then encrypted, so the only time that info is available to anyone ever is if they actually scan the iPhone with the ID listed. Then they see those same three pictures to verify you, and if needed, to also scan the Bar Code on the back of the ID. In theory, it does setup a way to just never use your physical card again, but nah

Are you still waiting? I'm curious how the process is a day later..
I deleted my first attempt after waiting 8 hours, and then started fresh. Got the notification about 40 mins later. I think it’s because I left my eyeglass on, but in my DL I don’t have them on.

Maybe? I was wearing my glasses in my Live Photo but not on my ID, either.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
