iPhone and Apple Watch users in California will soon be able to add their digital ID and driver's license to the Wallet app, based on the discovery of landing pages on the state government DMV website explaining the feature to consumers.

"Now you can add your California driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch so you can present it easily and securely in person and in app," reads the landing page, which contains broken links and placeholder images, and is still missing a proper website security certificate.

The webpages were discovered on Sunday by Jimmy Obomsawin, after someone added a link to the landing pages in an Apple Wallet Wikipedia entry last Wednesday.

Apple in 2022 enhanced the Wallet app with a new feature that's designed to allow driver's licenses and state ID cards to be stored in the app, but states need to implement support for the option. Rollout has been slow since the support was announced in September 2021, with Ohio last week becoming only the fifth state to add support, following Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia. The California DMV received permission to start testing mobile driver's licenses and ID cards with a limited number of people soon after Apple announced the support.

If you live in one of the five supported states, you can add your state ID card to iPhone by opening the Wallet app and tapping the + button. After selecting your state ID, simply scan the front and back of the physical card, then send a photo of yourself to the state DMV for additional verification. IDs and licenses stored in the Wallet app can be used in select U.S. airports at TSA checkpoints.

(Thanks, Jimmy!)

Apple is finally soon to be adding support for this feature in their home state!

I can’t wait until this feature becomes available here in Massachusetts!

I let all of my family members know about the availability of this feature in Ohio when Apple made it available last week

We just got it in Ohio and it worked fine at the CVG (Cincinnati) airport... which is in Northern Kentucky.

I assume I'll be carrying the plastic ID card for years to come though. Until every cop/bar/bank/school/etc accepts digital, we're stuck with plastic.
Thanks for the update as to this features’ acceptance at the Ohio airports

I read the article regarding this feature becoming available in Ohio last week but there was no mention of it working at either Cleveland Hopkins airport or Cincinnati airport so I was curious as to whether TSA had updated their systems to allow this feature to work when going through security (at the major airports in Ohio)

Did you use it at the TSA Pre✅ or the regular security line at Cincinnati airport? I’ve been a TSA Pre✅ customer for about 7 years, so I’d like to be able to use it at the Pre✅ line (instead of the standard security line)

I doubt many clubs will buy the devices to accept the digital IDs. At least not in the near future.
Many clubs and bars around here already use a handheld barcode ID scanner and I’ve seen NFC tap targets on them.

Now it’s just the matter of them actually getting updated to support it.

People forget that it’s not just proving age. They card everyone to check against a ban list. If this thing is as private as Apple Pay is they may never use it (like how Walmart doesn’t use Apple Pay).

The whole thing is useless. ATL airport has the tap scanners and they work but they refuse to use them. They demand physical ID unless you pay for Clear or have TSA/Delta Digital ID. Whole thing became a scam to buy digital ID solutions and we know Detla pretty much controls ATL. I tapped once last year and it worked fine. The dude lost it and I got screamed at. A manager came and said verified then reminded me that not following directions could get me in serious trouble.

Delta has their own system which requires you to give them a scan of your passport and even has a dedicated line. I always show my Georgia license on my phone and they go nope.

I've had my GA license for a while on my phone, but nobody takes it. Hopefully this pushes things forward.
Arizona here. I’ve used mine at the airport and at the MVD office.

….and that’s it. Supposedly the bars along Mill Ave now take it considering the ads at the train station and sidewalks promoting it. But I’m too old for partying now to test it out lol.

I am excited, California DMV's electronic driver's license app is such a kludge! Not sure how often I will need to "whip this out" but it will probably be more convenient (and faster) than pulling out my wallet!
It's also the equivalent of AOL for digital apps, every time I actually want to use it, I need to update it for some lame reason, and wind up just fishing out my plastic license. It's akin to "Buffering..." Every. Single. Time.

Looking forward to being able to use it, but let's hope that it's actually accepted anywhere. This seems like a good idea in theory, but I'm reminded that people still freak out when they receive $2 bills. o_O

How is it when the police need to see the driver's license ??

Now they will get the whole phone, so they can look through the phone for what ever they want - of cause you can still give them the plastic one.

The law say you should only show them the license, but they are not very happy when this happen.

We still having this argument in 2024? Not how it works. It’s a wallet card just like any other you can present it with the phone locked. Also if they don’t have the scanner on their person it doesn’t matter anyways.

Yeah, haven't found a single use for it. Also, it's essentially uselsss.

"In accordance with O.C.G.A § 40-5-29, all drivers must have his or her driver's license in his or her immediate possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle and law enforcement can require drivers to display their physical driver’s licenses. Therefore, the Georgia Digital License is not a replacement for your physical card when you are driving a vehicle."

I'm from Denmark, and here we have had a driver's license app for years now (not the wallet one from Apple) - but the police still want the whole phone - I think I have only experienced they were using the QR code once - and in US I can only imagine how it will go - even today they do not respect the rights of individual drivers.

So 2024 or not - that's how it is.
