I'm from Denmark, and here we have had a driver's license app for years now (not the wallet one from Apple) - but the police still want the whole phone - I think I have only experienced they were using the QR code once - and in US I can only imagine how it will go - even today they do not respect the rights of individual drivers.

So 2024 or not - that's how it is.
As I said its a native card using the Apple API. No QR Code phone is locked when presented. If they don't have the scanner to trigger the API then physical ID. If someone is careless enough to unlock their phone and hand it to law enforcement that's on them but it has nothing to do with digital id API.

That’s what it should have been/done when the CA DL app was first released a year or so ago…

Alabama has had a digital driver's license program which was recognized by law enforcement within Alabama. The program was cancelled for new licenses. I still have mine in my Apple wallet & it's valid until November. But when I renew I lose it. I heard today from the State that Alabama has no plans to reinstate the digital license.

Trading plastic for less plastic and maybe future security issue. No thanks.
Lost faith in all companies holding my data. Too many breaches and interceptions of the data flow.
All they will need now is Social security or country id`s and your non-existent.
So your license is about to expire and the system is down then what?
Every been to s store when the machines are down?
Get a ticket from the dmv/police and its not your fault.
Whos responsable for that? Too many questions.

Don't get your hopes up any time soon...the FAQ for the mDL says it's in a pilot program until JUNE 2026!
No reason to think they couldn't do both? Maybe it will be: "Those that are enrolled in the mDL can also enroll in an Apple Wallet pilot program."

You have a physical ID still. You also have all the information available to you that the physical card has in the wallet app. Worst case you can read off the ID number.

Is there going to be a warning that using it may cause cancer? 🤣 It seems to be on everything else in California.

Honestly, though, I'm hoping Michigan adopts it soon. Could make things so much more convenient.
That would be the iPhone itself 😆

What rights?

It's because living in California is hazardous to your health.

(Full Disclosure: I live in California)

Your license isn't the same as your facebook account. The government already has these data, and when you add the ID to wallet, Apple performs a handshake with your governing authority, before deleting the data. Read here for more info, notably:
The subset of data from your ID is deleted from Apple servers right after sending your request to the state. Your selfie and the video of your movements are deleted from Apple servers shortly after the state issuing authority approves or denies adding your ID to Apple Wallet.

So your license is about to expire and the system is down then what?

If it's "about to" expire, then it's still valid, so this is a non-issue. If your license has expired, then you should've been proactive and renewed it before it became an issue. Having a digital or physical implementation wouldn't make a difference here, as your physical license is expired as well. If an officer is unable to check your license because their end is down, it's probably your lucky day. Your end doesn't require a connection, like the rest of Apple Pay. The encrypted data is stored locally.

Contest the ticket, like you would for any ticket you've been wrongly accused of.
Too many questions.
I'd suggest researching the topic if you have further questions. Add your driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet

Great news, now we need to make sure TSA is ready to accept them
TSA still considers digital IDs to be in a test period and only accepts them at select airports, three of which are in CA.

Also note that the roll out is more complex than just TSA. If TSA declares an airport to be digital capable, then all airlines at that airport must be able to accept digital ID at bag check in. As an example, here in the DC area DCA and BWI are digital capable, but IAD is not.

iPhone and Apple Watch users in California will soon be able to add their digital ID and driver's license to the Wallet app, based on the discovery of landing pages on the state government DMV website explaining the feature to consumers.

california-drivers-license.jpg

"Now you can add your California driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch so you can present it easily and securely in person and in app," reads the landing page, which contains broken links and placeholder images, and is still missing a proper website security certificate.

The webpages were discovered on Sunday by Jimmy Obomsawin, after someone added a link to the landing pages in an Apple Wallet Wikipedia entry last Wednesday.

Apple in 2022 enhanced the Wallet app with a new feature that's designed to allow driver's licenses and state ID cards to be stored in the app, but states need to implement support for the option. Rollout has been slow since the support was announced in September 2021, with Ohio last week becoming only the fifth state to add support, following Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia. The California DMV received permission to start testing mobile driver's licenses and ID cards with a limited number of people soon after Apple announced the support.

If you live in one of the five supported states, you can add your state ID card to iPhone by opening the Wallet app and tapping the + button. After selecting your state ID, simply scan the front and back of the physical card, then send a photo of yourself to the state DMV for additional verification. IDs and licenses stored in the Wallet app can be used in select U.S. airports at TSA checkpoints.

(Thanks, Jimmy!)

Continue to carry your physical driver’s license or state-issued ID card. Law enforcement, state government agencies, and businesses aren’t yet accepting the mDL.

Thanks for the update as to this features’ acceptance at the Ohio airports

I read the article regarding this feature becoming available in Ohio last week but there was no mention of it working at either Cleveland Hopkins airport or Cincinnati airport so I was curious as to whether TSA had updated their systems to allow this feature to work when going through security (at the major airports in Ohio)

Did you use it at the TSA Pre✅ or the regular security line at Cincinnati airport? I’ve been a TSA Pre✅ customer for about 7 years, so I’d like to be able to use it at the Pre✅ line (instead of the standard security line)
Worked just fine at CVG TSA pre check, yep. Still gotta bring your plastic ID since in Florida... no digital IDs.

Walmart doesn't use Apple Pay because they're trying to roll out 'Walmart Pay'. They don't accept Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay as they're competitors. Nothing to do with 'privacy'.
They want you to use Walmart Pay so that way they can continue to track what you buy.

I am excited, California DMV's electronic driver's license app is such a kludge! Not sure how often I will need to "whip this out" but it will probably be more convenient (and faster) than pulling out my wallet!
Worse than a kludge. Every time you pull it up, it needs to update or something. Just what you need at times when you need a driver license.

Nightclubs and event security dont accept these digital ID's

Until they do, this is a useless gimmick

Been waiting here in Connecticut for 2 years. Was announced 2 years ago. Unsure what the delay is as hasn't been mentioned again in over a year.

Ohio provided a cryptic update saying "coming soon" in 2022 and we just got it days ago... so hang in there.

It's been available here in Colorado for probably a year and I still have not been able to add mine. It fails when it goes to verify. Gave up even trying.
