iPhone users in Iowa are now able to add their driver's licenses and IDs to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, allowing them to be used in lieu of a physical ID.

Iowans can add a license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app by opening it up, tapping on the "+" button, and following the onscreen instructions and verification process.

The digital ID in the Apple Wallet app can be used at select TSA checkpoints, including the Des Moines and Eastern Iowa Airports, as well as at some business venues. It can also be used within select apps when ID is required.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, businesses are able to accept an ID in Apple Wallet using iOS apps like Tap2iD mobile, VeriScan, and Mobile ID Verify for in-person age verification purposes.

As with other states that have adopted digital ID integration in Apple Wallet, Iowa's DoT warns that the digital version does not replace a physical license or identification card. Locations that accept mobile IDs will expand over time, however.

Apple announced a new Wallet app that supported digital IDs back in 2022, but states have been slow to adopt the feature. So far, only Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Hawaii, California, and Ohio have implemented support. Apple has said that Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia are working on support.

I like the idea and I have mine on my phone for a few years but never really used it.

With iOS 18.1 in wallet there is no more option to add transit cards (Spain).
Why is it? Is it the same in other regions?

How do you give it to a cop to run back to his car and look up?

So for the cops is seems that you need your “physical” ID

This represents roughly 83 million people.

This would bring the total to about 103 million people. So a little under a third of the U.S. population.

Slower rollout than Apple Intelligence.

This is the same as "Safari seems snappier" as it gets trotted out every. single. time. an article of this type comes up.

The answer is always the same - they don't have to take your phone, they bring the scanner to you.
We would hope so, but you are offering your unlocked phone to a revenue agent.

NEVER willingly hand your phone over to a cop under any circumstances. They can ask for your ID or Driver's License all day long and you don't have to provide it to them. If they ask, all you have to do is provide them with your full name, DOB and city you live in and they can look you up in their database system.

Seems like this is more of a state issue than Apple issue. State governments will have to approve using digital IDs.

Submitted to add. Way easier than the enrollment process in the Iowa Mobile ID app. Just awaiting authentication. I’ve used the Iowa Mobile ID app at the local airports prior and it was clunky. Hope this is much better!

Much easier to just hand them the license.

I ask this because I'm in Canada, they normally walk your license to the car here.

I needed additional verification, but once it was done the process took like five extra minutes. My ID is now on my phone and watch!
