I use it with TSA almost every week. The scanners all face you and there is no physical way they can grab it and scan it for you, because it also requires your Face ID to authenticate.
Thats was not my experience a couple years ago and not the way it was setup at the airport I was at. The phone was grabbed after I authenticated with faceid.

I know when people have experiences that dont align with their opinion, its easy to dismiss them or act like they are made up.

I am glad you have had only positive experiences. Hopefully my experience was an outlier.

I guess folks could just leave their physical IDs in their cars in the glove box or some other compartment, and then use the digitial ID everywhere else. For that "just in case" scenario with police. I'm with you though, not handing my phone over to them lol....
That is exactly what I do. I leave my DL in my vehicle, primarily so that I will always be in compliance with the law that says I must have it with me when driving. That way I do not have to find and carry my wallet every time I drive. I also ordered up a non-DL ID from the DMV that lives in my wallet for storekeepers, TSA, etc. that sometimes want to see ID.

The thing is, the Face ID part doesn’t come up until after the tap.

Largely useless feature. Had this in Arizona for years now. Most TSA checkpoints won't accept it or look at you like you are crazy. Cops won't accept it at all. Most place that need your license won't accept it either, no real reason to have this yet (although I understand the movement has to start someplace).

Arizona has a state app that provides an actual verified image of your license, and many places DO accept that (but still not law enforcement)--but that is completely different than the Apple wallet version. Frankly, there is zero reason for the Apple wallet version to even exist at this point.
I use it at Phoenix Sky Harbor every week, without issue. Nobody looks at you weird or crazy, you just tap, and Face ID, and then go. I also used it at the Scottsdale Apple Store picking up some HomePods I did with order pickup. These are the only two instances I have used the Apple Wallet mobile ID however. The Arizona state app doesn’t even work for me since I upgraded to the iPhone 16. Government makes crap apps it seems. But not all government apps are bad, as the Valley Metro app is some of the best public transit apps I have ever used.

That's a big assumption that most police departments will supply every officer, or car, with the necessary equipment to read these. What happens when you get pulled over a county brownie that doesn't have a reader?

Personally, I have zero interest in carrying a digital ID...I don't even always carry my iPhone when I leave the house...
When they say they will accept digital ID on the road, what will happen is they WILL equip their officers with the readers. And they will make it 100% legal to only have digital ID as a driver, because a bunch of states had to change their laws to allow digital ID to be accepted (the laws specifically say you need to have an ID card which is different than digital, before they had to change them to allow digital to be accepted). Though those states have their own apps to do the digital ID for cops, none use the Apple Wallet ID system, only TSA uses it among law enforcement.

If they can’t get a reader up and running it’s on them because with digital ID accepted you won’t be culpable if they can’t read it. But if they were trial adopting digital ID, they would probably say we can accept it as digital, BUT you must also have your plastic ID on you at all times.

If they did accept digital ID 100% but their reader wasn’t working for whatever reason they probably will just do a warrant check over the radio using your name and let you go.

I am in Colorado, one if the first states with this feature. I added my license the day it came out. The first time I successfully used it with TSA the agent grabbed my phone from my hand to scan it. I removed my id minutes later. The other 3 times I tried before that I got crazy looks like WTF are you doing. If a paid rent-a-cop with zero authority is that agressive, you know real authorities will be worse. I have had many experiences with checkout people in small mom and pop store where they wanted my to hand them my phone. In those cases I said no and paid with a credit card.

The future you imagine based on your apple pay experience buying cheetos wont be quite what you think it is.
But , we have to start somewhere, right? I've never been asked for my phone at a grocery store and I use my Watch or phone all the time. When everybody has a near field reading capability, this will be a good thing.

That's great...today. But I believe you are bucking the trend. It may be the 22nd Century before we get there, but we are headed there. On a recent trip to Ireland, on a country road, at an ice cream stand...they took Applepay in all its"Near Field" glory. Too bad this country is so ****ing slow to implement darn near anything.

I can tap my card just the same as I tap my iPhone.

Great.... and everybody does not have an iPhone (or equivalent). But....the future appears wireless and touches.

I appreciate California adopting this. It’s odd that my drivers license is in the credit card stack in Apple Wallet. Would have thought it would be in the lower stack with IDs for insurance, etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but not a big deal.

The credit card stack is all of your “secure element” cards. Your house keys, car keys, and transit cards also go here.

The bottom stack is open ended and anybody can make a PkPass file for iPhone and android.

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but it's orders of magnitude more difficult. With a physical ID all you have to do is recreate something that looks and feels like a real ID. With a digital ID, you'd have to hack your phone to get the ID on it, and then hack the server which would do the authentication. Really, the easiest way to do this would be just to hack the DMV itself and then just go ahead and issue yourself real license credentials. Good luck with that.

Except that people know what to look for in a real driver's license and have a lifetime of experience with it, and paper/plastic cards in general.

Someone would have to know what it's supposed to look like, that it really is in the Wallet app and is really the card and not something else you added.

If the other party has an NFC reader that's one thing, but that can also easily be faked with writable NFC cards.

Neither one is foolproof, but for now people are so unfamiliar with the concept of a legitimate, issued ID on a phone wallet program that it's just not viable.

It's like when tap to pay was becoming popular. I had so many merchants tell me they don't support it, right up until I tried it anyway and it worked and they didn't even know what I just did. They only accepted it because the machine told them to.

But without that machine that someone has set up for them and told them to believe, nobody is going to accept a digital ID card. And that is a long time in the future and will probably have negative side effects.

This completely baffles me. All I hear when I read about this is Mila Jovovich shaking her head and repeating “Multipass…multipass” in The Fifth Element.

I pulled out my scale for this. My license weighs 3.7 grams. Is that such a burden? SRSLY? How MUCH is in your wallet particularly if all your cards are already in Apple Pay. Which brings me to my last old-man rant? What will you do when your phone is stolen, lost or out of joules? Wait. I know.

“Multipass…Multipass!”

If you only have 1 card that not in Apple Wallet, why even have a wallet. Just get a phone case that holds a card But even that seems silly. I can see a future were no one needs to carry a wallet. But a lot of people, like boomers, still will.

iPhone users from New Mexico are now able to add their driver's licenses and IDs to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a digital version of the license that can be used in lieu of a physical card in some locations.

New Mexico residents can add a license or state ID to the Wallet app by opening it up, tapping on the "+" button, and following the instructions to complete a verification process.

Digital IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints across the United States, in some businesses and venues, and in some mobile apps for verifying age. New Mexico has developed an app called NM Verifier that is available in coordination with the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department for verifying digital IDs.

"Having a cell phone and mobile device with you at virtually all times is simply a fact of life these days. This new capability adds one more level of convenience for us all," New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said in a statement.

As of right now, a digital license or identification card does not replace the physical version, and New Mexicans are required to have a physical license available when driving.

Apple first announced Wallet support for digital IDs in 2022, and states have been slowly adopting the feature since then. As of right now, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Hawaii, California, Ohio, Iowa, and New Mexico have implemented support.

Acording to Apple, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, Montana, and West Virginia are also working to implement the feature.

wonder if I can use it to vote??????

I put my new Digital New Mexico Driver's License in my phone wallet, and it will work with my watch like Apple Pay. As with Apple Pay, I will keep my phone in my pocket, and use my watch to send my Driver's License info to the recipient's device. No rent-a-cop (or anyone else) will be trying to grab my phone out of my hands.

Like others mentioned though, cops here in NM will still require a physical driver's license, and so will most businesses. I think it will take a few years before digital driver's license are accepted much.

This reminds me how things were with Apple Pay in the beginning. We had it on the phone, but not too many places accepted Apple Pay. Over time, more and more places started accepting Apple Pay. Even now, not every place does. We still have to carry a Credit Card to be safe. I think it will be a long time before we can stop carrying a physical license, but maybe in a few years, we won't have to take it out and hand to strangers too often.

I just leave my license in my car, but i agree that it will be great when this is widely accepted. Now that i dont carry a wallet anymore, i could never go back.
It is a chicken vs. egg scenario. If there is a sufficiently large pool of digital ID's out there, LEO's will get the scanning devices.

I'm not as brave as you are in not carrying a wallet. :) I still carry my wallet, but having my credit cards in ApplePay allows me not having to pull it out to pay. When I'm out with my parents, and I see my mother opening her pursue to get her wallet to get out her credit card, I just see of the risks that exist of having the pursue or wallet snatched or having something fall out of the wallet. I am (gently) pushing her to using ApplePay.

Maybe in 5-10 years we will be all digital....
