As noted by 9to5Mac, Apple recently started rolling out the ability for Hawaii residents to add a digital version of their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a convenient and contactless way to display proof of identity or age at select airports, businesses, and venues.

Hawaii is the seventh U.S. state to support this feature so far, joining Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, and soon California.

To add a driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app, tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner, select Driver's License or State ID, and follow the on-screen steps. Hawaii is not yet showing up as an option for all iPhone users.

Apple first announced this feature in September 2021, but it has been slow to roll out, and the digital IDs can only be used at a very limited number of locations.

For example, the IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints within select U.S. airports:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
Apple says travelers should refer to TSA checkpoint signage to confirm availability of the feature, and the TSA's website offers more details.

Apple's website says that the digital IDs in the Wallet app can also be used to show proof of age or identity at "select bars, concerts, festivals, and more," but the company does not list any specific locations, and adoption is far from widespread.

In a press release earlier this month, Apple reiterated that iPhone users "do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID."

In 2022, Apple said the six additional states listed below would "soon" allow residents to add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app, but over two years have passed and none of these states support the feature yet.

Those six states:
  • Connecticut
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
Apple's website has a page with more details about the digital IDs.

I enjoy the unique designs employed by each state for the Wallet State ID program. I wish Apple would just reveal what the card designs are for each state.

Hawaii is showing up in the list (at least for me now), but CA is not showing up yet. This isn't really useful yet, but it's going to turn into how we use our ID going forward, at least for some things...I can imagine an Apple Watch popping up a QR code and then a picture for verification, in addition to having it show up on your iPhone.

As of right now these Apple Digital IDs are completely worthless. I tried it at the DEN airport and was just told no by the TSA agent. If enough states have this available it may become useful some day, but that seems to be far off.

The Colorado ID app works reasonably well, and is a legit facsimile of my ID. I have used it at several establishments. 60% of the time, it works every time.

Also, I have a shortcut setup so that when I open the Colorado ID app it automatically goes into Guided Access. This way if someone snatches it while I'm displaying it, they cannot rummage through my phone.

I want this so bad in Pennsylvania. However as much as this state has fought and dragged their feet against Real ID, I’m sure we will never get it.

I mean, that was expected if not better then expected. I don't think anyone was under the impression that this would be useful at all for at least another 3-5 years. Heck, US only recently got on board and still far from fully on board tap to pay.

If you fly internationally, but not often enough to justify paying $100 every 5 years for Global Entry, I recommend getting Mobile Passport Control app. The list of airports is not as extensive (about 40), but it covers most international US airports and it's very easy to apply and use.

Is it needed? I have seen a video of some people claiming that in US you do not need driving licence if you are in your private vehicle. They seem to call it travelling- not driving! they go by a title “Sovran Citizen”, if I am not mistaken 😀
Ironically there's equal number of videos of 'sovereign Citizens' being tased in the US...

I mostly agree. I’ve only been able to use it at airports a handful of times. Most recently, they also wanted to take my picture—which I refused and irritated the TSA person.
