CA is a lot like Apple in that it takes us FOREVER to implement something new. I read it'll be at least a couple years before it becomes a thing in CA.
Both Apple and the CA DMV have announced that it is "coming soon." Folks with an Android phone can already add their license to Google Wallet.

While the 5 previous IDs are rarely used, the big bang in use and expansion of state adoption, will be use online. See the various US states that have, or are attempting to require age checks for porn sites, but the big driver will be if KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) is passed, which depending on the final language, could require all the big platforms to do age checks.

If you drive a vehicle on public roads in the USA, everyone in every state is still REQUIRED to carry the original drivers license card issued by the DMV. Digital driver’s license is not legal for driving.
Exactly this! I was really bummed when I didn't see my state on the list...that was until I read that it won't replace the need to carry it while driving. So I suppose in large cities with really good public transportation, and for those people living in that urban area, this could save them carrying their ID. As in Yes for New York but no for LA. So for the bulk of the US population, it rules out the benefit of having this "ID"

I mean, that was expected if not better then expected. I don't think anyone was under the impression that this would be useful at all for at least another 3-5 years. Heck, US only recently got on board and still far from fully on board tap to pay.
"that was expected" and "I don't think anyone" are really presumptive and strange in replying to someone who directly counters those assumptions. Obviously people WERE thinking it would be useful quicker and had no expectation of it taking 3-5 years. Now SHOULD those expectations have been in place? According to you, it seems like no. But I am sure with the billions of people on the planet, there are many scenarios in which those expectations are reasonable. I would offer the encouragement to be curious about why others think different rather than telling them the expectations they clearly stated they had were wrong. Even if there is a clear "right" and even if you "are right" it still helps to understand others. :)

Is it needed? I have seen a video of some people claiming that in US you do not need driving licence if you are in your private vehicle. They seem to call it travelling- not driving! they go by a title “Sovran Citizen”, if I am not mistaken 😀
Those are nut cases who typically have red hats in their trunk next to a shotgun.

Also, I have a shortcut setup so that when I open the Colorado ID app it automatically goes into Guided Access. This way if someone snatches it while I'm displaying it, they cannot rummage through my phone.
That's a clever set up! Can you share your shortcut for this?

Oklahoma was one of the first states announced to support this feature to my astonishment but knowing the government here it'll be 2042 before we get it.

As of right now these Apple Digital IDs are completely worthless. I tried it at the DEN airport and was just told no by the TSA agent. If enough states have this available it may become useful some day, but that seems to be far off.

The Colorado ID app works reasonably well, and is a legit facsimile of my ID. I have used it at several establishments. 60% of the time, it works every time.

It didn't work for me either, and I'd imagine any police I show this too when pulled over would want to take my phone back to the car like they do with a regular ID. It's good in a pinch, but can't replace a regular ID yet.

Sad that it can't cover all situation needs. At this time it won't replace the need to carry it while driving until all the states support this feature.

I've tried several times to load my CODL not Apple Wallet but it is yet to wortkm something always goes wrong. I've contact both the state and Apple and each says the other is the source of the problem. In the end it doesn't matter because even at 58 I still have to show ID at the liquor store and none of the stores I go to will accept a digital ID.

im surprised Hawaii got in the list. I always thought California would get it first.. I just added my Hawaii ID

I can't remember the last time I carried my driving license? There has been talk about digitalising them in the UK for some years but I am guessing they are making too much money producing them every 10 years.

Has anyone used this - RELIABLY?
I was one of the first in Georgia and it's failed 100% of the time (airports).
The TSA dude, his colleague, and the IT guy writing code in IntelliJ IDEA (I don't know why he was at the security lane) all were perplexed. Did not work.

In Georgia they had three different/separate contractors do the work, which became a huge issue (delay) because they wrote things differently (surprise surprise).

Two things:

1) Our airport (Columbus) now has this. Hell yeah!
2) How do they use/scan our ID on our phone at TSA?

Just open shortcuts app. Go to Automations tab (middle). Create a new shortcut "When" a particular app of your choosing opens. Have the action "Do" "Start Guided Access". You can have it run automatically, or "run after confirmation".

Hawaii is showing up in the list (at least for me now), but CA is not showing up yet. This isn't really useful yet, but it's going to turn into how we use our ID going forward, at least for some things...
I've used it plenty at TSA. The pilots for age verification at purchase (e.g. releasing that you are over 21 and your photo when you Apple Pay to buy alcohol) have been really slow though.

Funny story, earlier this year when I used it at HNL not only was I the first person the TSA agent ever saw use it, she didn't realize it had been enabled.

The challenge is probably more getting people to realize they can use it (e.g. the critical mass of egg vs chicken). I guess they are doing better than I would fear since my parents know it exists.

I can imagine an Apple Watch popping up a QR code and then a picture for verification, in addition to having it show up on your iPhone.
These digital ID specifically needs a 'reader' - there is specific regulation that just flashing the card in Wallet is not a sufficient form of verification. The actual driving licenses and the bluetooth/nfc/adhoc wifi protocols that readers need to speak are defined in the international standard ISO 18013-5.
