In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, providing a convenient and contactless way to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

Unfortunately, this feature continues to roll out very slowly since it was announced in 2021, with only nine U.S. states and Puerto Rico offering it so far.

During its WWDC 2025 keynote last week, Apple reiterated that more states plan to offer the feature in the future, but it did not provide a timeframe.

Supported States

The following states offer driver's licenses in the Wallet app:The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Future States

Apple previously announced that the following states have signed on to adopt the feature:
  • Montana
  • West Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Illinois
Participating Airports

Apple Wallet app IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints within select U.S. airports:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
Apple says travelers should refer to TSA checkpoint signage to confirm availability of the feature, and the TSA's website offers more details.

Apple Wallet IDs can also be used to show proof of age or identity at select businesses and venues in the U.S., but there is no list of locations.

Digital ID

In addition to driver's licenses and state IDs, iOS 26 introduces a new Digital ID, which can be created based on a U.S. passport. Apple says iPhone users can present this Digital ID in person at select TSA checkpoints for identity verification purposes during domestic travel within the U.S., but it is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel and border crossing in lieu of a U.S. passport.

The idea is good, but until the states and fed actually announce that it can be used in lieu of a physical ID, it’s carry both.
I was an early adopter of the CA DMV app, never got to use it and it sucks.
I could add my CA ID to my wallet, but the effort involved and the benefits don’t match for me.
A few weeks ago I had to get some docs notarized and I asked if they would accept a digital ID - the answer was no.

It’s early early adapter stuff, if you get benefit out of it, good for you. Not worth it to me at this point

  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
Cleveland Hopkins airport is also one of the airports available to use this at in Ohio - Cleveland wasn’t available on the list at first, but has since been made available:

I'm in no hurry for this, unless the process of setting up a digital State ID meant that my physical ID could be used at an Apple Store to prove that I own my Apple Account, in the event that something bad happened and I got locked out of my Apple Account.

Why does it take states so long to roll out something so uncomplicated?
I think the states DL is complicated, it's easy for different states to have different laws that impact this (though I share your disappointment).

What's really frustrating is that it isn't immediately available at ALL airports - which kinda limits its usefulness. Should be as simple as just buying the hardware and installing it everywhere (which, since it's a function of the Federal TSA should be possible). I know people may say "but the cost!" but perhaps we just do one less presidential golf day or drop one less bomb somewhere and then Americans can benefit from a more modern system!

Why does it take states so long to roll out something so uncomplicated?
Because it's not "uncomplicated".

The states need to build their own infrastructure to support this feature. Law enforcement and establishments need a special reader in order to read the digital ID. Training and public education needs to happen. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting. It's not like they can just flip a switch to enable this.

You actually believe all that? It’s just the gov trying to hold progress back

North Carolina is also going the "lets try our hand at our own app" route, which if it is anything like their DMV staffing will be a complete and utter failure. (Yeah, I know the DMV shortages is by design.)

Oklahoma backed out of this 3ish years ago when they released their own app but had to pull it due to handicap accessibility options. The state has said they have no plans to support or implement any new digital ID's and will not recognize any other states digital ID's.

Do you need to unlock your phone to access the ID? If so, what a great way for government agencies, in particular border guards, to get you to voluntarily unlock your phone for them.
This is a good point. I’m not a fan of other people generally handling my phone. Apple wallet works fine because we can hold our own devices. Is there an etiquette yet for digital id’s?
