Nothing on the list talking to me. No current state, no future state, and the only time I use my passport is international travel. Not even the airports I frequent are on the list. Ahh well. My license is the thinnest card in my wallet at least.

Because it's not "uncomplicated".

The states need to build their own infrastructure to support this feature. Law enforcement and establishments need a special reader in order to read the digital ID. Training and public education needs to happen. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting. It's not like they can just flip a switch to enable this.
For sure you have a big fat taxpayer funded pension waiting for you.

Every time I attempt to use digital ID, I’m faced with scrambling, not knowing how to respond and then being told ultimately that I must produce a physical copy.

We’re like 10 years away from digital ID being widely accepted.

Georgia passed a bill that will allow you to present an electronic drivers license (such as in Apple Wallet) for traffic stops. You will not be required to present a physical drivers license. Finally I can leave my wallet at home. This will be effective July 1, 2025.

Typically, we as tech nerds would know and use it before the staff even have been briefed about the technology.

Even more typically, I am in modern Sweden and they will develop their own system that will be more complicated, in a further future. It may well take until iOS69

And as usual, Texas will be one of the last to the game, if ever, for stuff that's been legalized and approved for the other half of the country.

North Carolina is also going the "lets try our hand at our own app" route, which if it is anything like their DMV staffing will be a complete and utter failure. (Yeah, I know the DMV shortages is by design.)
I can believe it. North Carolina believes it has the human resources to build its technology, given the state's abundance of talent and expertise. But in reality, it's not as easy as they believe. DMV NC staff lack a lot to be desired, frankly. 😔

To put a point on that, the bill goes into effect then, but it’s only asking the law enforcement agencies of the state to phase in digital ID over the next 2 years, it’s not making them accept digital ID on July 1, 2025. But this is the first in the nation that I have heard of Apple Wallet being accepted by anything other than the TSA (or some venues, or in apps).

I find it useless. Never going to hand my phone to the police so will always carry a physical license. I also find the more cards I put in the Apple wallet the more user unfriendly it becomes. I now delete all cards I rarely use and utilize its app or its physical card.

Yep. This is NEVER going on my phone, even if my state does do something this stupid.

Yeah no thanks. I'm not handing my phone over to a cop. He's getting my proof of insurance, registration and physical drivers license.

He ain't gettin anything else

I would never give po-po my unlocked phone. Always film the police.

Tell us you’re ignorant of how this works without actually saying so…

C’mon folks. At least spend a minute understanding the reality before reacting with your (incorrect) imagined idea of how it works.

@CarlJ provided a good explanation of how it works. You’re not handing your phone to anyone, just like you never hand your phone to a cashier. This is a supplement to your physical drivers license, not a replacement. Even when there are states where police can accept the digital license, which presently there are none, just give them your physical license.

Where the digital ID comes in handy is something like a club or a beer/liquor store. Their readers get only the data they absolutely have to have for what they need to do, such as your picture and date of birth. They don’t get your home address or other details like they can grab from your physical license.

The main reason I would like this would be in those rare situations when I would forget or lose my drivers license, drive off without realizing it and getting pulled over. I would have it on my phone hopefully viewable from the Lock Screen with digital license.

I've flown through most of the eastern seaboard's list of airports that "Support" this feature and never once has any TSA agent known how to scan a digital ID, or there is only one station set up for scanning and no indication of which one it is before you approach / that one may. not be manned...

And WA state still can't get its head out of its ass to make this happen when it houses one of the biggest tech areas in the world
About the only thing the WA State legislature has gotten right the last 30+ years. Here's hoping they never implement this nonsense.

It’s a supplement not replacement.

In every state so far, you still need your actual physical ID for the police.

If you forget and leave that home, that’s on you.

Consider a single person living alone. They show their physical license at a bar or club or store, and some dirtbag worker decides to target them since they have the person‘s home address. With a digital ID they don’t get that, they only get what they need, which is date of birth.

I would show you my license but my phone is out of power :).
Well then you can’t pay for anything at the club or store anyway, so you may as well go home and get your wallet.

If you’re thinking about police, there’s no state where they accept digital ID. You better still be bringing your physical license, otherwise that’s on you.

Maybe try understanding this stuff before sharing your (misinformed) opinion?
