Yes installment plans appeal to those living their life on credit. Providing a way to buy with little out of pocket expense at time of purchase.

No... Because cash buyers like myself don't find full retail price appealing. Instead I'll happily find my phone at a discount from Amazon or another source.

Recently did some restructuring of my AT&T account. The store manager there was fairly talkative. Seems she see's Next and the DirectTV tie-in doing very well for them. Most customers use Next and seldom buy outright. That supports what I have been reading in some of the periodicals.
 
The iPhone is not mediocre in any aspect and is at the top of the heap in terms of overall usability and support so say its customers through the sales volumes and overall disagree with your assessment.

Samsung is the one that has to be careful or they could end up like blackberry more so than Apple.
Samsung will survive since it will manufacture 80% of the iPhone 8.....
