Apple's tech specs suggest the iPhone Duo's Main camera sensor is seemingly a match for the iPhone 17e's, not the standard iPhone 17's.

iphone-duo-selfie.jpg

According to Apple's tech specs page for the iPhone Duo, the Main camera is a 26mm, ƒ/1.6 sensor with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and Hybrid Focus Pixels, also enabling a 12MP 2x Telephoto crop from the same sensor. The iPhone 17e's tech specs page lists an identical 26mm, ƒ/1.6 Main camera with Hybrid Focus Pixels, the same autofocus terminology Apple uses for the iPhone Duo.

The match is not total, though. The iPhone 17e's tech specs describes plain "optical image stabilization" with no "sensor-shift" qualifier, while the iPhone Duo's does include it. That detail instead lines up with the standard iPhone 17's tech specs page, which pairs sensor-shift OIS with a different autofocus term, "100% Focus Pixels," the wording iPhone 18 Pro's tech specs page also uses but Duo and 17e do not.

This suggests that the Main camera of the iPhone Duo realistically falls somewhere between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 17, possessing the sensor-shift optical image stabilization of the iPhone 17, but with an iPhone 17e-style sensor that uses Hybrid Focus Pixels.

The overlapping Focus Pixels wording with the 17e is fueling speculation online that the two devices share a sensor. Apple has not published a sensor size or pixel pitch for the iPhone Duo's Main camera, leaving the matching Focus Pixels wording as the only official link to the 17e for now.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, with pre-orders opening October 16 ahead of an October 23 release.

I don't think this characterization of the Duo having a main camera similar to the 17e is accurate.

It's basically the iPhone 17 camera rather than the iPhone 17e. The only similarity with the 17e is the main autofocus having Hybrid Focus Pixels rather than what the 17 and Air have (Apple calls them: "100% Focus Pixels"). However, with the capabilities of the A20 Pro, it's likely auto-focusing will be better than what the 17 has. Plus, as discussed under the table, it has better video capabilities than the 17.

Everything else spec-wise is a 17 type camera system rather than a 17e. Here's a comparison table. I didn't bold everything, but highlighted a few features that are different between devices. In any case, the cameras across these Apple devices are largely the same.

Also, the video features (not in the table) are better in the Duo than in the iPhone 17.

The Duo can do: 1) 4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps on the Main camera; 2) Cinematic mode up to 4K60; 3) 4K120 slow motion.

The iPhone 17 tops out at 1) 4K60 for ordinary recording; 2) cinematic mode at 4K30; and 3) 1080p240 slow motion.

The real question is whether the sensor size is different in the Duo than the 17 (unlikely), but this looks a lot more like the 17 camera than the 17e.

We’ll have to wait for reviewers like petapixel to do a deep dive. Not sure why they would make the specs like that? Does the 17e/Duo have worse autofocus than the 17? That’s what I can infer from your table. Maybe the 17 can use all the pixels for AF while the Duo/17e can only use a portion of the pixels as it’s not 100%

If I am paying two thousand dollars to start I should have the best possible cameras. I should not have to then carry a camera or a second phone if I want the best quality pics. This seems to plague every foldable or most of them.
The Pixel Fold didn’t have that issue: https://www.theshortcut.com/p/google-pixel-fold-camera-review

The upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold also looks promising: https://petapixel.com/2026/09/08/xiaomis-gorgeous-18-fold-smartphone-has-leica-cameras/

i have a Samsung Fold 8, and the form factor is fantastic, yeah the camera isn't great, but the WOW factor is still great.
i wish the Iphone Duo had a SIM card slot as I need that for work.
i'm sure most people who buy the Duo will love the form factor.

note i've been an iphone user since 3GS

Dolby Vision (Apple pays licensing fee) vs. open standard HDR10+? Historically, Apple has been tightfisted about paying someone else a steep licensing fee.

With front and rear cameras, how long before someone does Insta360 type videos?

Yes, the article, especially the title, is misleading.

these comments are coming from the same vibe as when the iPad/ipod/Apple Watch/etc were announced “it’s dead on arrival” “failure” “not as good as competitors” typical ignorance to what the market actually cares about rather than your insanely nuanced opinion
I don’t think nuanced is the best word choice there.
