How durable is the iPhone? I plan on purchasing my first iPhone soon, but I am really worried if this phone would last, I usually keep my cell phones 2-3 yrs. Would it be best if I buy a case for it when I am out, but take it out of the case when I get home so I can use the dock? I usually baby all of my electronics, such as my iPod, but even then, accidents happen where the iPod accidentally slipped out of my hand, and the top chipped. The last thing I want is a broken iPaperWeight. The glass screen worries me just a bit.

    Thanks in advance!

My iPhone fell out of my pocket as I got out my car today going to work. I wanted to cry as soon as I heard my baby hit the floor. picked it up.. few scuffs and scrapes but otherwise I was really surprised at how it held up. NO scratches to the screen what-so-ever. They are pretty darn resilient.

Unfortunatly I have dropped mine mutiple times. Aside from a few scratches on the case everything still works fine. I think they are very durable but i'm sure it will only take that one odd bounce and you could crack the screen. It's a rsk you take but in my mind a risk worth taking !!:D

It's going to take a pretty serious knock to hurt the iPhone. I've had mine since 6-29, it goes directly in my pocket, it has never had a case, and it's pretty much perfect still. The only thing I avoid is putting it in the same pocket as my keys.

    Edit: 6-29

Its a tough cookie. The screen is damn near scratch proof and thankfully Apple avoided the shiny aluminium finish on the back like on the Touch.

This, coupled with it being flash memory means that its perhaps the most durable iPod ever.

they're not old school nokia tough (i actually saw one get run over, and still be fine after once) but they are pretty damn tough as long as you dont play football.etc.with them

if youre really worried tho, id check if you can wack it on house insurance, or take out a policy, so if you did bust it.. you get a new one.

I saw this test on youtube about the iPhone's durability, the kept hitting hard with keys, pen, smashing it on the ground, stamping on it. It took ten minutes of extreme smashing on the ground to slightly crack the screen.

It was a griffin case. Preety thick plastic and should've absorbed the shock. It only fell from a couple feet onto a carpet and where it touched first was covered by the case! The screen broke but everything else was fully functional!:apple:

My iPhone has been as durable as I thought it would be

I have dropped it, kicked it, and generally done some stupid things to it yet it still is standing strong with a front screen that has held up without any major damage

Now, the back has a lot of scratches but that is ok. I can deal with that. Rather the back than front

Wow that is just terrible luck. I've managed to drop my first gen at least twice a month, with and without a case of various types on it, and apart from a small dent on the back (sustained when it fell out of my shirt pocket onto a wood floor about 4 hours after I bought it) it has survived everything intact.
I recently dropped mine onto a marble floor but it had the Contour iSee on it and all was well. I've switched to a Vaja Top case because I still think that covering the screen makes sense if you have the dropsies.

I would really like to get an iphone to replace my 8310 curve and razor but before I go purchase one after reading that the screen cracks and they have a propensity for water damage, I have some concerns
