My friend has a 4S and her phone suddenly came up with an iTunes symbol and a plug on the screen. No passcode, find iPhone turned off.

Hard reset did nothing and when she plugged phone into iTunes it said the phone could not be recovered

no water damage...any help? thanks

You can download an ios 7 version, connect the phone to itunes, and manually restore it to that version. If you don't know how to do it, check on youtube how to install manually an ios version on itunes..

Not sure what you mean. My friend said this error happened when she was trying to update over air to latest ios 7.1.2

Just put the phone in recovery mode and restore in iTunes which will do everything automatically.
