Theory: the iPhone 17 is now so close to the Pro line that future spec bumps will not increase sales.

The reason there will be no iPhone 18 launch in September is because there is no iPhone 18.

Instead Apple will just bump the price of the 17 Pro down to $949 whilst keeping the 17 at $799 for another year to combat rising costs.

Come 2027 the 17 Pro will then become $899 and take the place of the base models which will be permanently written out of the equation.

The 18e in 2027 will gain the 0.5x from the iPhone 12 (12mpx, no autofocus).
I see low probability of this.

iPhone 18 is there, the only diff is with split launch they can capture the people who want to be early adopters to get the pros as they are more profitable for Apple.

That way a non-pro customer can buy a pro model as they come out earlier, if they do not want to wait there is no other option.

People (not me!) have been wanting MacOS to run on iPads. But what we are really going to get is iPads running on iPhones. Closed, it’s iOS. Opened, it’s iPadOS.

There's been a lot of angst here about the front camera in the 18 Pro being in the upper left corner, but that seems to have been based on one rumor, as far as I can tell. But Jeff Pu's note apparently referred to a "Structured light, smaller Dynamic Island." That would suggest a centered camera, which makes more sense.

It will also be 1.3 kg, and the A20 performance is extremely important for Apple Intelligence Google will provide remotely.
I know you’re joking but it will be Apple running Google’s model remotely. There will also be a lot of local AI run, as there is currently (not just the Apple Intelligence functions).

As a Galaxy Fold user for years now, great to see Apple acknowledge the foldable form factor. While I personally will be buying the Z Fold 8 due to its larger display, hopefully Apple will make foldables more mainstream.
I can finally ditch the iPad and have an iPhone and iPad mini in one device. 😎

I'm struggling because I love the novelty of it and want to see what it's like to have a foldable. The thing that's getting me is there are only two cameras, and I'm really big on photography. Not going to be an easy choice.

Can macrumors please stop using seasons to describe when things are expected. Whilst I know your USA based It’s incredibly frustrating for those not in the northern hemisphere. Months would be ideal or even quarters, ie second quarter of 2027.
They should also stop writing in English, since that's frustrating for the southern hemisphere as well. Let's bring back Esperanto.

Not sure that's a feasible way to run something. So, they'll release iFoldOS with the new phones.

I feel your pain, speaking as a Canadian that wishes reported prices displayed currency, or Amazon links mentioned "US Only". Not everyone lives in the US.

Now to keep on-topic with the article... isn't it incredible just how freaking sophisticated the SoC is getting? I'd love to know how much Apple engineers directly contribute to the advancement of the chip technology, or when we reach the limits of silicon, rendering the name "Apple silicon" obsolete. 😃
Hear hear!

And for the life of me, include State Tax when posting prices. There are people who think the $999 iPhone Air is way more expensive in Europe because it's listed as € 1229 But it's not, the Air in Europe is around €1010.

I'll pass on the first generation fold. But I might trade my 17 Pro for an 18 Pro; the camera improvements might make it worthwhile, and the 17 would get a good trade-in value.

For most of us, we need to see the software part...we know Apple on hardware is on top
But on this we need more than just iOS on the big screen like first ipad was. We need ipadOS itself on the inner display
Agree. If it runs real iPadOS when open with zero restrictions or limitations, it will be an insta-buy for me, as I am an iPad Mini user. If it doesn’t there isn’t even a point in making it.

They have all the infrastructure with unified binaries, etc etc, so will be all too familiarly disappointing if they don’t make it so.

Using the same chip for both iFold and Pro makes sense since both are the premium model. So, that is not surprising. Like one says, sun rises in the east, or water is wet 😉

I won’t be buying the Apple Fold (iPhone ifold?) but I look forward to a new shiny iPhone 18. The best iPhone yet!
Apple has multiple product line offerings to satisfy different customer base. Glad to hear that one of the product offering satisfies you. Other customer base who loves to have a folding phone will be satisfied soon. Great and commended job, Apple!

This sounds good for my yearly upgrade but definitely will be passing on the folding gimmick .
Folding phone is not a gimmick but it is a new unique transformative experience iPhone line offering. It is iPhone and iPad mini hybrid or two in one device which serves those who love pocketable mini iPad functioning also as a phone. It will be a blow out on the folding phone market line. Surely, iPhone owners who love a new form of iPad and iPhone in one pocketable device will want it. Kudos to Apple by offering this transformative experience for iPhone users!

Really looking forward to the foldable apple device. I’m a fan of the iPad mini (honestly especially for manga, but well, work stuff too). Perhaps with this I won’t need two separate devices.
Depending on weight, size and durability, if it goes for around 1300€ I think I’m willing to be a guinea pig for this.

Not surprising to hear this. All the high end models will be having the latest and most powerful chips. Better battery life due to the new chip will be beneficial.
