Really curious to see this. It really can’t have a crease. That has to be the problem they solve. I saw a Galaxy fold up close again recently and that crease is too much.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one.
I think it'll probably be fine, once they get to somewhere between the third and fifth iteration. Not touching a first-gen one with a ten foot pole.

It's just gonna be hard to trust a screen to last a hundreds of thousands of fold/unfold cycles in the middle of the display with no wear and tear, without seeing it on iPhones that have been in the field for several years.

The general idea of small easily pocketable thong with potentially huge display has a lot of advantages. If they ever get to the sort of "lift up the holographic display image with your fingers" style of screen embiggening seen in The Expanse and similar, I'd trust that sooner. But folding electrical parts with display elements on the folding part? That screams "high propensity for failure" to me.

I mean, it's MacRumors, after all. Half of what we deal with here is rumors, conjecture, and speculation (the other half being news of newly released things, and PR).
Sure, but I think it's been pretty well established that one of Apple's main goals in the design of the Fold is to minimize the crease, to the point months ago that it went beyond rumor and entered the realm of actuality.

It’s like a special case of Schrodinger’s cat: while normally nobody knows what state the cat is in until they take a look, in this case we have leakers inside the box.

Another flop
See what he did there folks…

actually I’d be more interested in a flip phone and it’s a pity Apple aren’t pursuing that idea, there’s a ready made market out there for people who want a small phone and the iPhone Air might not satisfy but a flip phone would be a whole different matter…

It’s not too late to kill it Tim. Don’t let this awful device be your legacy 😂
If anything, this is less “Tim’s legacy” than it is the world‘s introduction to John Ternus.
Tim’s legacy is already pretty well set, his legacy is never going to be a singular product, it’s going to be expanding apple from a niche computer company just dabbling and consumer electronics into an absolute behemoth of a brand. Nothing is going to change that at this point.

However many people have been calling the MacBook Neo “John Ternus’s first launch” and it’s pretty clear if that’s the case, the iPhone fold will be his “first huge launch” and I have no doubt that he will be associated with the phone way more than Tim Cook.

The lack of FaceID is a fatal flaw.

TouchID is horrible once you have used FaceID.

Apple should have made it slightly thicker to accommodate FaceID that would have probably also allowed a telephoto lens and made crease management easier as well. While boosting battery life or made repair easier.

But as usual for Apple, it’s style over form.
Depends. I've used FaceID for 5 years now, and would go back to TouchID in an instant if it was offered on the normal iPhones. FaceID was a step backwards to me.

It’s all great but what about the Apple Pencil ? Because without one it won’t be an iPad replacement and that will be a deal breaker for me … Same with the MacBook Pro touch screen

who will actually buy this and use it as their main phone
Long time iPhone user here and I'm on the fence about the Fold. My daily carry is a 17pro max and an iPad mini 7. I use the mini at work and it is perfect for choosing preselected options in a custom FileMaker database without being a size/weight burden when carrying it all day. I don’t need high powered specs for what amounts to data entry and retrieval. Instead of two devices, the Fold would take that down to one that still fits in my pocket yet expands for the times I need a slightly bigger screen.

Still, I would have to make some compromises on the camera and price point, so I'd need to see it and reviews first before deciding (not my usual behavior I admit). Regardless, I appreciate Apple moving into this design area. It's good to have options even if it might not be what works best for me personally.

Can we start to use a thumbnail that actually looks like what we know it is going to look like? Totally wrong aspect ratio, and then in every article you talk about the aspect ratio being different. You have the proper renders, make a better thumbnail.

Also, the only way this flies is if it can do real iPad apps, and have the same multi-tasking capabilities, including external monitor support on par with the iPad Air and Pro. If not, and it also doesn’t get the high end cameras, it is dead.

If it gets that stuff, I am going to pre-order immediately.
