I don’t recall another major Apple product I’ve cared this little about 🤔
I do; the AVP.
This is a close second, though. 😛

But the Fold is not a phone, it is a tablet+phone that fits in a pocket. Huge difference.$1999 is a gasp-worthy price for a phone.
AVP didn’t have a purpose to justify the price. Foldable phones are actually pretty nice for people who need a bigger screen that goes into their pockets.AVP comes to mind. It's the same situation: interesting technology, but far too expensive.
Have you spent two or three sessions at an Apple Store investigating the AVP? IMO it is hugely interesting tech, but it does take some hands-on time to reasonably understand. Simply assuming one understands what AVP represents is not enough.I do; the AVP.

$2500 and above, I expectHow it’s priced is going to matter a lot.
Sorry, I find the AVP more interesting than a bendy phone.I do; the AVP.

Given inflation exacerbated by tariffs, you are correct that absolute prices will probably not come down. However for years with iPhones we have gotten much more tech competence (= value) every year without raised prices. You think? In what timeframe? Has any smartphone model ever got cheaper?
Meanwhile in the other article from today here on MacRumors:The device will be around 5.5 inches in size when folded, but it will open up to around 7.8 inches.
The report reiterated that the device is expected to feature a book-style, inward-folding design with a 5.35-inch external display and a 7.58-inch folding internal display.
2400 for 256g? Then maybe add AppleCare. Yikes. Trade in? Might not offer like avp. With a 2400 starting price that is one hell of a lofty goal! I REALLY doubt it will reach that, they didn’t exactly get it right the with Air did they. But hey you never know.
A v1 tech demo indeed is likely ultimately useless - - in the short term. I too find it's current utility not quite enough for me to purchase one; but close. If Apple would just make all the Apple apps work with AVP I would buy one, because the tech utility is already very high. But Apple has shortchanged the AVP by not even investing in making its own software capable of enterprise-critical work. Two, and borrowed a buddy's for about a week.
Interesting tech, indeed, but ultimately useless. He ended up selling it not longer after I gave it back.
Unit sales in the millions of $2k+ devices should not be considered niche, not amounting to much.I don’t see 22% of a niche market amounting to much, but as long as Apple’s not losing money on it maybe its R&D will produce innovations that can be used elsewhere.
I will definitely buy this. I don’t want to carry an iPad in a bag with me everywhere.
but AVP is something to care about. it's an interesting product. phones are boring now and folding phones are boring fragile and overpriced.AVP comes to mind. It's the same situation: interesting technology, but far too expensive.
