Samsung aims to produce around 1 million units of its upcoming "Wide Fold" device, in an attempt to directly rival Apple's rumored foldable iPhone expected later this year.
Correction: Samsung is going to use the display they invented to make a phone and will also sell some to Apple, who hopes to rival Samsung with their gen 1 device.

Apple missed the boat on this since Android is going to have a trifold phone before Apple even has a bifold. They should scrap the bifold altogether and make it a quadfold!
Even thought i was wooed by the pixel fold, and i know many at work that have the galaxy fold 6 and 7, the main feature, the foldable screen was not really that useful, and you have to worry about the screen developing cresses, mine developed a black line in he middle, and i was entitled to a free replacement, i just move-on and got the 17 pro max, if some people find them useful, then by all means, but the limitations of the format, not for me.

Never seen such rumors, if the inner screen should be 16:9, the outer screen have to be essentially 8:9, so more or less square.
It's my bad-- reviewing the previous Macrumors video with 3D printed mockup, it is a 4:3 aspect ratio but for some reason, the picture of the Samsung device at the top of this article (and Samsung folds I've seen in person) seems entirely square-- maybe it's just the angle. 4:3 is not bad. Don't know if I'll pay $2399 for it but not bad. :)

Glad to hear Samsung joins the game of “Wide Fold”. The more product choices, the more selection benefits and affordable prices for phablet consumers! It will not be surprising that Apple will follow Samsung other taller foldable choices such as Fold Z and TriFold Z products which I prefer due to the folded height and wide comparable to iPhone pro max. Foldable phone market is growing! This is a transformative progress! Phone experience is transforming to be phone and table experience which would the FUTURE phone experience whether we prefer it or not. The evolution from the only phone experience to phone and tablet in one pocketable device has been progressing. Cannot wait to see the foldable phablet becoming the common device in the near future.

The iPhone fold should be a flip-phone, not a tablet hybrid. People seem more interested in the Samsung Z Flip than the Z Fold.

At first, I thought along the same lines as you. I figured a top-down clamshell would be more classic or chic.

I can't really see what use case a clamshell device would have, though. Apple's probably going the bifold direction because a phone that can become a mini-tablet would have more of a use case scenario for the majority of its users.

Sometimes that’s how it works. But other times Samsung is first. They came out with a watch before Apple. And of course the “big” screen phone back when Apple was insisting that 3.5” then 4.0” inches was the “perfect” size since it could be used with one hand.

With folding phones I get the sense Samsung kept releasing iterative designs to show Apple the then-current state of technology and trajectory. It was obvious for a while that Apple would eventually release a folding phone but wanted to wait until the screens were acceptable quality for their design philosophy. The first folding screens were laughably bad but the technology steadily improved.
Well, whether apple is first or not, it's hard to argue with the fact that their version of the device always sets the standard for the category.

Nah, the tri-folds are too thick and heavy currently for mass adoption. The Galaxy trifold is almost 40g heavier than my old Z Fold 3, and that thing was a brick

I think the wider aspect ratio will be a good balance for video watching when open, and doing most everything else on the cover screen
Apple can do a thinner and lighter tri-fold than Samsung can. A wide-fold is not useable one handed. It’s significantly wider than iPhone Pro Max

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing initially, as I really liked how easy it was to use my Fold 3 one-handed, but on the other hand (ha) two-handed typing was cramped with the narrower aspect ratio

I think for those who prefer two-handed use it will be a really comfy typing experience, and a lot easier to reach control center. I guess there are compromises either way

I'm sure Samsung has to sign an NDA as well as some sort of non-compete to be their supplier. But, since Apple wants the part that samsung supplies, Apple probably has to be reasonable in what the non-compete restricts samsung from doing, otherwise they won't get their display.

The typical formula for this agreement is:
  1. Apple comes out with product.
  2. Samsung mocks it in a new ad.
  3. 6 months later, Samsung comes out with the same product.
This is the way.
You, uh… you do realise Samsung has had foldable phones in the market for years now…. Right?
