So, I have been killing myself over the last couple of days because I decided to upgrade my mother from her iPhone 5. I had a choice of getting her the 6 or the 6s. I ended up getting her the 6 because of all the new features in the 6s, she will use exactly zero of them. She pretty much is an e-mail, music, facebook, and a couple of games person. I think the 6 will be a viable phone for her for a while to come and I didn't see a compelling reason to get her the 6s as she literally will not use any of the features. I know it is only an extra $100.00 but it feels like it would be a waste when all she will use is the bigger screen. What do you guys think?

It sounds like a fine choice. If she's going to use the FB app a lot it's a huge battery hog even on my 6S Plus. So somewhere down the line if she complains about her battery not lasting you can get that new silicone battery case for her that we all poked fun of a week or two ago because it is rather unattractive. But some forum members who did buy it seemed to like it.

My husband had upgraded his 6Plus to iOS 9.1 and it ran fine so I think the 6 should do fine with the new iOS for another couple of years.

I don't think there is any point getting her the 6S model. If thats all she uses it for then thats more than enough. Those who don't use their phones loads it isn't important.

my GF got the 6S but never uses any of the extra 6S features apart from enjoying live photos from time to time. She never uses 3D touch for example. Isn't a power user so battery life is never an issue

My mom uses almost nothing that would have an advantage on the 6s except for the camera. She loves taking her pictures. She is very happy with the upgrade from an iPhone 6 to a 6s.

You didn't give us your mothers' age but if she has trouble reading small print get the 6s plus. It also has a larger battery capacity.

6 sounds like a fine choice. A co-worker of mine, who is about 65ish, first smart phone, just got a 6 Plus. She's over the moon about it. She's not missing out on anything. 3D touch would only confuse things.

As far as size, the 6 Plus in zoomed mode is very easy on the eyes in a good way, without being cramped or exaggerated looking. Might be worth a look. I use my 6s in zoomed mode and it's also very easy on the eyes, but things tend to get a little cramped looking, but I'm used to it and like it a lot.

Thanks all, I would have gone 6 Plus but my mother thinks that it is too big. I think I made the right decision for her. Thanks for all the input.

I had a similar doubt when I was about to buy an iPad as a Christmas gift to my aunt.
I ended up buying iPad Air 2 for $100 more. I know she won't use touch ID and won't even know it is possible to run 2 apps side by side, but Air 2 is future prove and will receive updates years while iPad Air has only 1GB of RAM and a slower SoC.
iPhone 6s has 2MB of RAM and a powerful SoC so you spend $100 more today but you'll be forced to buy a new model later in the future.
This fall, to save money, I bought a 5C for my father but it was a good deal and I saved a lot of money. I'd never bought him the 5c if I could get the 5s for $100 more

Did you ask your mother what SHE wants? (Or is it a surprise?) Although I think its super nice of you to get your mom a new phone, the only person's opinion that really matters here is hers. Who's to say she wouldn't use or enjoy additional features if she had them? I'm not in any way trying to be a spoilsport, but you don't really know what she would use or not use unless she had the opportunity to try. And once again, very nice of you to take care of mom regardless of which choice you make!

My wife is not that techie and loves her 5s. I don't think she'd be happy with the size of a 6 or 6s. She does carry a cellular iPad Air with her all the time do uses that for most things.
