I had an iphone given to me for rogers. Would I be able to just switch my sim card? Or do I need a specific plan?

If the iPhone originally belonged to another Rogers customer, then you can just insert your SIM and it should work. If not, then it is likely locked to whatever carrier it was originally provisioned with ... which makes it more complicated.
