what's the likelihood apple will ever release the iPhone with service from Verizon (or any other provider for that matter) and is there any idea of a time frame?

I believe AT&T has an exclusive 5 year contract with Apple. I have no doubt that the iPhone will be available through other GSM providers after that. ...As for a Verizon phone, don't get your hopes up.
