I recently purchased an iPhone from eBay and was told to ask for the IMEI to make sure it wasn't blacklisted. It checked out and was clean but it appears to still have the old users iCloud information on it so as I go through the setup process I get stopped. I've attempted contacting the eBay user but he isn't responding to any of my messages. At this point I'm not sure if I should start a dispute through eBay or if there is a way around this that I'm missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So when you are going through the setup of the phone, can you get to the point where it allows you to either restore the phone from a backup or setup as new? Or is it actually iCloud activation locked? If it is actually activation locked then EDH667 nailed it and you have a fancy paperweight.

It prompts me to sign into iCloud. On iTunes I am prompted with this "Activate iPhone: This iPhone is linked to an Apple ID. Enter the Apple ID and password that were used to set up this phone (xxxx@xxx.com)"

If it is iCloud locked you need to start a dispute as the device is worthless to you useless unless the lock is removed.

Make sure ALL communications are done through the eBay mail system.

Open up a case with ebay right away. Take some screen shots and attach those to the messaging system.

Also, replying to ebay emails sometimes does not relay the message. So be sure you are using ebays messaing system through the app or via browser.

You will likely get your money back once ebay steps in. It doesn't matter if he stops responding. The only concern is he is really sophisticated, and has somehow taken the money and shut down a fake paypal account.

What was his feedback score btw?

Apple provides a way to look to see if the phone is already blacklisted through the web.

Can you advise on what this "way" is? I usually use Swappa's free check but would rather use an Apple service if one exists.
