I thought the toughened glass screen was very durable. Much better than plastic screens on other phones.

Not at all. It's not tempered glass. Tempered glass shatters into little pieces.

This is what Apple says is "optical quality" glass. Not sure what that means, except perhaps it doesn't have waves in it.

Nowhere near as tough to break as plastic, but they switched to glass at the last minute because everyone was complaining that plastic would get scratched up easier.

State Farm

I have my iPhone, camera equipment, and laptops all insured through State Farm. Very affordable and if something happens State Farm takes care of it with no hassle.

We have State Farm and am very interested in hearing more (not just on the iPhone, but laptops, etc.... Can you share policy details and costs? Thanks!

Just call State Farm. Ive noticed that peoples costs were varying.

I got mine insured for $30/yr. Then again, I only have the 4GB. They just ask for a receipt. But I think they only insure $500+ (obviously my $499 qualified too).

Are you getting this insurance from State Farm without also buying an auto or homeowner's policy? If it's just additional coverage under your homeowner's policy, you're asking for trouble. Filing a claim on the iPhone will almost certainly result in an increase to your policy premium. Small claims (i.e. $600) aren't worth filing because of this.

yes it work perfectly.... i dont have any insurance.. how much do have to paid anyways... tomorrow i'll be at the apple store to fix this....

All of these issues with being lost or stolen or dropped and broken can be solved by paying $30 a year w/ $0 deductible thru state farm...much cheaper than APP and covers way more.

Coverage includes all accidental damage, hardware malfunction, lost or stolen.

EDIT: just noticed the other posts about this....yes it is a stand alone policy.

I have heard some Genius Bars have been replacing the screen in-store for no charge, so I guess it just depends on the store and it's management.

I got mine replaced. Same-day turnaround. Sent it over night, next day sent a new unit back, got it the next day at home.

After reading this thread I went down to the Soho Apple Store this afternoon to see if I could do the same with my iPhone. It had a long scratch from the top of the screen down to about halfway. I explained to the genius that I had taken good care of the phone (it was in otherwise great condition) and that something must've scratched it when I took it out of my pocket. After talking it over with someone in the back room he with agreed to swap it for a new one, free of charge! I was amazed. The replacement should come in tomorrow and I just need to swap out the SIM card and i'm set!

Does anyone know if they use refurbished iPhones for replacements or brand new ones?

Mine was replaced!

Unfortunately I had my iPhone fall from my shirt pocket at about 1 foot from the sidewalk and it hit just right face down :( When I picked it up thinking I'd get a scratch on the metal frame, much to my surprise the glass was shattered all over... The music was still playing, and everything still worked.

When I was getting used to the idea of spending yet another $300 on a new one (using the $100 gift certificate), I saw this forum thread and renewed my hopes.

At the Apple store, the manager looked at it, and not only said "we'll replace it, no problem", but I didn't have to wait for the usual 3+ hours to get a genius to talk to me - I was out of there with a brand new iPhone in about 15mins, no charge...! The replacement unit is a new iPhone - they told me Apple hasn't enough refurbished units to start supplying replacements (yet).

So, THANK YOU all for these posts, and good luck to others.

This could be your chance to get accidental damage cover and who's to know when your phone got damaged ;)

iphone glass breaks

I have seen the posts regarding this and am amazed that apple replaced folks phones... they did so without having insurance or any added coverage? They practically shooed me out the door oh well too bad it will cost $250 and void your warranty--

I went to the Seattle store-- any suggestions on how I can get them to help me-- my phone was not even activated for one week before it slipped out of my hand onto hard plastic and fell just right to shatter the glass-- it is still usable but Apple was terribly unhelpful-- i know there are aftermarket sites but we are nervous replacing it ourselves.
suggestions?

I fixed my broken iphone for $35

I bought one of the glass pieces off ebay and replaced it myself. It was not easy, but I saved ~$250. All in all I'm happy. I wrote up my experience and how I did it here:

How I fixed my broken iphone

i had to pay $250 to get a new screen, plus $30 to rent a iphone while my original is getting fix.
so total of $280... for this..

What world of cost benefit do you live in. You could of bought a brand new one for that price....

some people...

You don't understand subsidized pricing.

But I am really amazed at how many people got their broken glass fixed for free by Apple. When I took my mom's 3G in for issues she had been having from day 1 (loop restarting, freezing) the Genius complained that there was a scuff on the bottom and that was probably the cause of the issues! Ridiculous, but they replaced it anyways of course.

Still, good to hear of other's success with Apple customer care.

I think they mean by "optical quality" glass is the glass used on the iphone is the one used in glasses that dont scratch.

Most glasses scratch if you try hard enough! ;)

Optical glass is basically good quality glass, free from colour casts and, as its name suggests, mainly used for optical purposes. Some grades can be brittle which could explain some of the reported broken screens.
