iPhone Glass Supplier Corning Faces EU Antitrust Probe

They aren't "preventing" their customers from purchasing from other suppliers. Their customers are settling on the fact that they are the best option. No one is forcing OEMs to use them. They choose to do the contracts.
If you buy a 911 for you to enjoy, I`m sure you`ll get an discount on a Macan for your wife :) Being a return customer isn`t a bad thing for pricing either. Il`ll drop the 3 for 2 toothpastes next time around ;)

Uh, the entire investigation exists to determine if Corning are preventing their customers from purchasing from elsewhere.

That’s literally the whole point of the entire thing.

“It is [a] very frustrating and costly experience to break a mobile phone screen. Therefore, strong competition in the production of the cover glass used to protect such devices is crucial to ensure low prices and high-quality glass," said EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager in a statement.”
I stand corrected :)

And EU wants to ensure that Apple, Samsung and all the other smartphone makers are able to choose whatever components supplier they want. The only bad guy here is Corning. What is so hard to understand?

Did Apple or Samsung complain, or is the EU doing the whole savior complex thing (again)?

There's a very big difference between offering you a discount on the Macan, and telling you that if you buy a 911 your wife cannot buy a BMW.

See people, that's why iPhone mirroring on the Mac is not available here in the EU. It's not as simple as "but they could do it, there is nothing preventing them from doing it".

We're not gonna mindlessly defend Corning too are we? It's one thing to secure a dominant market position by making the best product - but Corning did not do that. Per the article, their supply agreements required device makers to source nearly all their glass from Corning.

I’m European. And I do enjoy some of its regulations such as the 2 year warranty or allowing us to install apps from third party stores even though I’m good using the default App Store.

However, this is going too far. Like someone else said, Apple should be free to invest in the suppliers and manufacturers they want or think are capable enough.

Well, if that’s the case maybe they should be investigated, but I completely get the feeling of those who think that the EU might be behaving in a too interventionist way.

They are. EU does not force Apple to use other suppliers.

This has nothing to do with Apple's exclusivity deal with Corning.

In Apple's deal, Apple requires Corning to only sell to them some products in exchange for R&D and investments. There is nothing wrong with that.

The EU investigation is about Corning requiring OEMs to only purchase Corning products and require Corning's permission to source from different vendors.

EU economy is going down and they need money. If you can’t beat them with innovation, sue them - Motto of EU

They'll need it more than ever now that the election went the way it did. I predict a nasty trade situation with Europe (and everyone else) will come very soon.

I suspect you are right. These things have a way of spiraling out of controls as companies pressure their governments to take steps to get the other side to back off.

Do these people not know that Apple invests money in to their suppliers to help fund research and product improvement? Why should they be forced to hand over their gains to competitors? 🤪

EU next month, probably, “Hey VW sorry you went all in with that EV stuff. Don’t worry though, we’re going to force Toyota to help design your new hybrids.”
Lots of components in your car are from 3rd party suppliers - including companies you’ll have never heard of. It was quite eye opening working with one of them!
