I had a SE T616 (pretty much the same as the T610 IIRC). That was my first "cool" phone back in the day. I loved that sucker, and I still have it and use it in between iPhones :D

I had a W600 and then the W810i as well. I thought I'd never have a non-SE phone, but then the iPhone came out :p

Yeah. Mine just gave up one day after a few years of heavy abuse. Longest I ever used the same phone. :D

You mean like the lack of upgrade ideas between the first gen and the iP4? I think the fact that the Android phones are getting better with each installment, and the fact that Apple no longer needs AT&T will cause the jump first.

NO because the spec increases between the 1st and 4th have made a HUGE difference to the user, from being able to store a LOT more songs and huge performance boost that is actually worth upgrading for, likewise for the screen. When we start going from 1ghz to 1.2ghz cpu, the benefits will be minimum and at that point people won't feel the need to upgrade.

The sidekick was "the phone to have" right after the razr. Everybody I know including me at one point wanted a sidekick before the explosion of the smartphones.

I remember back when the original iPhone came out, I very rarely saw one. When I finally purchased my first iPhone (also first smartphone), everyone wanted to see and play with it. It was kind of cool. Flash forward 3 years to today and I see lots of people with one. As far as iPhone 4's go, there are a lot of Apple fans at my work and I am one of 5 guys that have one. We also all got them on launch day. It's fun to FaceTime my co-workers. :apple:

does anyone know what phone the Nokia phone was that looked just like the Nokia 5110 but had a flip plastic piece over the number pad, and the mic was on the flip piece? my friend had it back in 2000 and he was the only person i ever saw in my entire life with it. any ideas?

this thread is kind of silly, the only real analogy that is being drawn is that both the iphone and razr have/had a high rate of ownership, but at different time periods. Other than that the phones are completely different. By that logic the toyota camry is the new 69 camaro. They both have high rates of ownership right?

w600 and t616 came at least a year after I had my razr cuz I had the w600 too when if first came out along with the samsung d500 and d600. I'm talking about the original grey Razr...not the newer gunmetal ones or pink etc. I went from the moto v600 to the razr like late 04 or early 05.

I know you're wanting to show that the RAZR pre-dates the awesome-for-their-time Sony Ericsson's, and as such somehow "defend" the RAZR, but there's no way the RAZR came out before the T616.

I don't remember when exactly the W600 came out, but I know for absolute certain I had the T616 in late summer of 2003. The RAZR didn't even come to market until late 2004.

The RAZR was a cruddy phone, bottom line. Even for its time, it had a crappy display, slow operating system, cruddy camera, yada yada. There was nothing cool or worthwhile about it at all other than being thin, no matter how old you try to make it ;)

Funny thing where I work, and wander around, iPhone 4s are commonplace, and if not that, previous gens of the device. I also see a lot of Android phones as well.

If I see someone with a dumbphone, most likely the device is at least 2+ years old, and the person just doesn't want to upgrade. I don't see that many people buying them unless they are with Cricket, or prepaid services.

What I remember is that before the iPhone, the popular "socialite" device was the Sidekick. Before that, the RAZR.

The irony of it all was that in '06 when I bought a rebranded HTC Wizard (a Windows Mobile device), people kept telling me that nobody would ever buy a phone that did more than text, call people, and keep an addressbook, and that smartphones were for corporate execs or geeks. Fast forward a year later, and almost everyone on the college campus I was at had long since tossed their RAZR for an iPhone.

yea, you're right about the t616 being before the razr but in all honesty that thing was just as crappy though...when I come to think of all the phones I've had over the years...most of them were all pretty crappy in hindsight to the crappy phones of today...kids these days are lucky...I grew up with a damn brick phone then the moto flip...

now there are only like 4 kinds of phones...iphone, android phones, blackbery and crappy "texting, free with activation" phones.

You are correct about the timeline of both SE T616 and RAZR V3. I owned both. Got the T616 in early 2004 and got the RAZR in 2006. A bit late for both. Still have the T616. Owned two black RAZR's and gave them both away to a relative and ex-gf. It was definitely popular for no reason other than it was a thin flip phone. It was a POS like my Motorola V600. Video recording was crap. Couldn't play music. No FM radio like basic Nokia phones. It did nothing well except be thin. I just sold my Nokia N82 about three hours ago and the buyer was coming from a RAZR. Called it a "dinosaur." It could only max out to 30 text messages he told me. Funny thing is when I got my N82 in Jan 2008, I came from that crappy RAZR too. I regret ever getting a RAZR in early 2006 because it was no different than my V600, but in a thinner package. Wasted two years when I could have got a decent mp3 capable phone. Should have went for the SE W810! That was a brilliant phone for its day. I feel sad for people who bought the RAZR for like $500 when it first came out in late 2004 as a fashion phone. Carriers offered it FREE in less than 18 months!

One of the best phones of that era (circa 2004-2005) was the Nokia 6230.

I don't know where you all have been, but I have seen more iPhone 4s since release date than the 3g or 3gs models. In the Ohare terminal I saw tons of MOTO Droids. But more iphone 4s. Same thing in Denver and around elsewhere in my travels this summer. They are very noticeable and easy to spot since they are all black right now and distinctly designed. You all need to get out more :)

Sad that WebOS from Palm hasn't taken off more. I've never seen a Pre/Pixi in the wild, which is sad because they're great phones with an OS that IMO, has potential to be near iOS quality.

My friend had a Pre. He has an Evo now. The Pre's problem was that it came to market amidst competition (iphone and android) with a huge number of flaws. The phone itself was too narrow for the portrait orientation, IMO

You can survive with issues if you are first to market... but if you're 3rd to market then you need to provide some firepower to stay afloat.

The G1 had killer apps (Gmail, Google Maps, contacts) and a pretty good sliding mechanism (mine still works great today).

The Pre tried to offer multi-contact integration, but it jumbled stuff up pretty fast. By time they got their s**t together, Droids were already on the way.

What I'm worried about is history repeating itself. The RAZR was a hot item, especially when it was exclusively on Cingular Wireless. Everybody wanted it because it was new and slim. As soon as it became available for multiple carriers though, it became old and boring and nobody wanted it.

In the UK and Switzerland (between the two, I spend most of my time) both have the iPhone available on any network, and it doesn't seem to have had any detrimental effect. If anything, it has given the iPhone a stronger lead over Android phones, because you no longer have the "I don't want to change network" excuse for not getting an iPhone.

The RAZR was indeed a crap phone. I tried to get people not to buy it when I worked part-time at that AT&T store (I was in grad school). But, they HAD to have it.

I had a SE 610. I loved that phone.

Funny my roommate loved his. It was nice and slim and fit in his pocket well. It seemed to work well. Didn't seem too hard to use at all (and had a nicer screen than mine). It apparently handled being put in a washing machine and still survived (try that with an iphone).

Honestly, I had a Nokia at the time (cause I was very loyal to them as I found they usually made tough phones). I am pretty sure the Razor was a better phone than that Nokia (it was Nokia's first flip phone and after having it I decided I liked my previous (Nokia) phone better which kinda annoyed me cause I update to get a better phone. I suppose though that time I had a reason for updating as the previous Nokia had withstood being left out in a parking lot in the rain twice and cause of such the battery life had gotten so bad it wasn't even lasting a day).
