The only time when the usage goes up is when you are using it. However, if your phone is in sleep mode and the usage continues to go up then something is running in the background. That is, there may be a rogue app that may still run in the background. Such that of Skype.

Generally a fix to this problem is simply to close all the apps. If you have a 3G S and up, then simply click the home button twice. This will bring up the Recently Used App task car. Hold the app for 3 seconds until it jiggles. Then hit "-" button to close all the apps. This is the recently used app so all your apps that you opened will go here.

You may alway want to do a hard reset of your phone by pressing the home and the sleep/wake (power) button at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears, ignoring the red slider. This close all the apps.

Trying to trouble shoot the issue (Apple has been no help and deny's anyone actually having this problem) I turned off my Exchange Server email I get through the office. The problem went away. It turns out the Exchange Server was hitting my iPhone constantly, causing the phone to work overtime and drain the battery.

I've had this problem with both my original iPhone and 3GS.
It only happens when I enable MobileMe, which constantly checks the server, or gets information from the server. Once I turned this off, my battery returned to normal.
I think what you say about exchange is right, as well as mobileme, and certain other email programs when the user sets the phone to "fetch" often.

I have an iPhone 4, and this has started happening to me as well since I enabled MobileMe. It gets so hot while in the pocket of my jacket! And the battery level drops suddenly to 14-15%

I phone 4 heating up and draining battery

I just upgraded from an Iphone 3 to a 4 the week before Christmas. I didnt have any problem until last week. My iphone superheated while in my pocket and drained the battery completely within an hour. My IT guy took the phone back where I got it and they replaced it -telling me to deal with Apple in the future. The new phone immediately overheated and drained. I talked to Apple today. I didnt have anything running that should have caused it and nothing different from my Iphone 3. They said , try without case, if that doesnt work, reset it , might be something corrupt from my Iphone back up -if that doesnt work - leave it out of your pocket - it must be searching for a signal too much. It doesnt have many bars in my office or home - yet I never had any problem with my I phone 3. Something is fishy.

I have had this problem persistantly on an iPhone 3GS. It has been returned to apple once and they sent it back to me saying they could not recreate the symptoms. In my experience it couldnt have been anything running in the back ground or a rogue app as i restored the iPhone a new device and only synced my contacts and nothing else. No apps installed and the problem persisted. Had to return the phone again and this time apple sent me a replacement. Very frustrating. I am now on my 3rd Iphone 3GS as i have also experienced another problem with the phone reseting during phone calls after the iOS 4 update. I love my iphone when it is working. It does everything i need and more but apple sure are making it hard for me to consider buying the next generation phone after this experience :(

This occurs to me too on my iPod touch 4th generation. It lost battery power from 100 percent to 0 in 5 hours of wi-fi and bluetooth off, and no apps in multitasking bar. I remedied this problem by leaving my iPod connected to the AC power supply for 4 days in a row, switching it off, then turning it on again and syncing it. Now I have this problem again after updating to iOS 4.3. Will try the same solution. Hope this helps!

I was on the train yesterday and had my 13 month old iPhone 3GS in my top pocket on my shirt and I noticed it seem to get very hot I have never noticed this before it was that hot my right nipple got hot lol. I usually have it in my jeans pocket so would not notice it before. The only difference I have noticed recently is that the battery is running down quicker but I put this down to the age of the phone.

I started experiencing the same battery issue a couple of weeks ago. Before that I always managed at least a full day of normal use on one charge. It's a 3GS 32GB, 1½ years old, iOS 4.3.1. When the problems began the battery drained in ~4-5 hours without any use at all, just having the phone turned on. I heard from a colleague that it could be an issue with a bad batch of batteries, so I changed the battery. Sadly the issue persists with the new battery as well.

I just tried the tip in this thread to turn of the Exchange connection. The first indications are that this did the trick, at least in terms of isolating the source of the problem. I have this issue independent of 3G or WiFi, both drain the battery. It seems that there is excessive traffic to and from the Exchange server.

Now the battery lasts longer again, but part of the usefulness is also gone. However, this does seem to be an issue that can be fixed through a software update.

Answer

I have been reading a few different forums and have put answers to this problem together with my solution to come up with the reason. I believe it has to do with all web services on I devices. For me having no credit was keeping my phone in a state of trying to "dial in and out" eg push, email and so on. Since topping up it has cooled and battery usage is normal again. If your not prepaid then it could be that your in a black spot when it does it. Bit of a flaw on I device but if you know the problem it can be managed. Your welcome.

I had the same issue. Remove the email login info and redo as the new account. It worked for me.
