Well I'm starting to try and pick up some German, so I may be able to translate in about 3 months... ooo! Pin this thread!

    Sorry man,
    1) It's plain and simple: the keywords are "iPhone", "prices", Italian carriers".
    2) Other than that it's just numbers, maybe you even failed maths.

As you can see iPhone prices are very high in Italy: they keep on selling 3G at the same price and raised the price for the new 3GS.

I posted the link just to show that my post is supported by official data.
    No need to translate anything.
No need to pick up German (it doesn't help with Italian).
No need to pin this thread.

    Thanks

    Ok, sorry.
I was expecting at least some words about the unbelievable decision of our carriers.

Yeah. It is ridiculous. I agree. But I felt like lightening the vibe a little.

Are those prices the up-front fee for a contract phone? What's the monthly cost after that?

No contract with these prices (luckily ah!).
Contract prices are still to be communicated.
But they don't promise anything good...

That currently converts to approx 610 GBP for 32GB PAYG. Suddenly UK prices look like a bargain!

Will be interesting to note if there's any variation in prices through the Eurozone as I'll be in Berlin next week...

Italians are rich. Heck they just bought Chrysler. So you can afford more expensive iphones.

    jajajajaaj :D
    that's maybe what they thought!

unluckily the saddest truth is that most of the Italians don't give money the right value!
my idea is that there will be a lot of people wasting their earnings buying the iPhone at those prices.. giving the carriers the right to keep those prices high!

I guess there's no need to be resident to get it without a contract, right?

AFAIK these are sim free prices though - the £540 for a UK PAYG still leaves you with a locked phone

No, but I guess it will still need unlocked from O2.

But remember O2 won't provide an official unlock code so you will be left with having to rely on software unlocks which may not be available for quite some time (ultrasn0w announced yesterday will unlock 3G and original running 3.0 - but very unlikely to unlock the 3GS too from the outset).

May be worth paying the premium for the Italian 3GS for the peace of mind of having a permanently unlocked handset regardless of iTunes and iPhone OS updates.

    Thanks for the advice.
Still prices are really too high, and I'm seriously considering to wait for another year and buy a new MBP 13" to replace my SantaRosa MBP 15" instead. For a bunch of hundred € more I think it's worth.

I agree ...paying an extra £100 for the peace of mind of an officially unlocked iphone 3GS is definitely worth the premium. The question is how does one get to buy the phone from Italy without flying over and picking one up?? Anyone know anyone who is going?? i'm interested in the 32GB white verison. The Italian guys on ebay are trying to make a massive profit selling the 32GB version which costs approximately £620 for about £900 on average!!! Its a good phone but not that good!!
