iPhone + Highschool = BAD!

I don't think cheating would be as big as an issue compared to stealing. You know, those stupid people who just love to show off their expensive phone around then place it into their locker for gym class then find out it's gone 'cuz someone hacked into their locker?
 
Maybe if we're lucky, one of the fatcats at Apple HQ will read this thread, side with the OP and, in a bizarre and financially-crippling volte-face, pull the plug on the whole project for the good of our planet's children. The iPhone must be stopped. People can say what they like about treo's and other internet-capable phones, but what about those promising students who refuse to use any OS that isn't made by Apple? You know who I mean: the really gifted ones who hang out in the IT labs moaning about how hard it is to get time on what few mac minis the school has and refuse to own mobiles whose menus deviate from anything but those vintage 2G Nokias like the 3110, 5110 and 3210, that saw Nokia claim all that market share with their singular-select-button-menu-system before deciding to recomplicate things for their "well-I've-already-got-two-chargers"-comitted user base by reintroducing the left-select-button/right-select-button-menu-system, all the while drawing parallels between Nokia's new models and Macs that ship with those mighty mice they find so controversial. Without honest exam results from these prodigious champions of ease-of-use, what future can we expect for the development of user-friendly software and industries, such as graphic design and film production, where trendy young creative types all operate with a seemingly innate sense of just how cool macs are?

And maybe, just maybe, that fatcat will then say to himself: "Hey, you know what we haven't done in a while? Brought out one of those computers those graphic designers and budget filmmakers love so much. In fact, its NAB today. I better call up the lab boys and have them knock up some new macbook pros quick-sharp in time to have them shipping by tomorrow."
 
All schools in my local area have restricted access to the internet. It's not hard to set up something that won't let you get onto certain websites.
 
My school has a confiscate until parents pick them up policy, but I don't think its a good system. The student should be able to pick up their phone, just because its not fair for the parents who have to have their afternoon screwed up just to pick up a phone.

It is the student who is not being fair to the parents.. not the school policy. If this is an issue than the student should make better decisions, and not conduct themselves in a manner which is inconvenient to their parents.

I agree completely, my school is in a safe neighborhood, but some kids walk or take the bus home and if they are stupid enough to get caught and taken away [their phone], that could be trouble for them in a physical sense...

Again, if this is the issue, than it is the STUDENT'S actions that make it an issue. Don't use it to cheat, don't get it taken away.

Simple, really!
 
I'm sorry, but how the hell are you going to cheat in an exam using an iPhone?

Just reach into your pocket, pull it out, turn it on, wait for the browser to load, type in the google search, wait a bit more, look up answer, copy it down, put phone back in pocket.

Aren't there invigilators in the US for exams?

And don't you risk losing all your grades in all your subjects if this happens?

The school could spend some money to block cell phone signals so there goes access the internet without wifi.

The high school I went to the year after I left the principal got the school board to buy them a cell phone jammer or wtv its called
 
In some schools such as mine they have installed jammers that block all cell phone connections no cell secrivce no internet
 
Not that this is immediately on target with the thread, but I did notice this article stating that High Schoolers are apparently pretty excited to get their grubby paws on the iPhone:
As part of its 13th bi-annual teen survey, researchers at PiperJaffray surveyed approximately 500 high school students at 11 different institutions across the country, asking each about their interest and buying patterns in portable digital audio and online music.

Somewhat surprisingly, nearly 85 percent said they were already familiar with the multi-function Apple gadget, and of those students, 25 percent said they'd be willing to buy one at the previously announced $500 entry point.

I don't know if it's good or bad for the reasons you guys are talking about [I've been out of school for far too long to have inside knowledge] but i think it speaks to the sort of latent marketing power the iPhone carries with it. 85% of HS students know about it and most of those want it. Those numbers are incredible success for marketing- getting that kind of attention for a very expensive product among a group of people who, if wealthy enough, is very very willing to shell out the cash... psieu. Wow.

I doubted that the iPhone could sell the 10 million that Jobs wants to in his first year. But when looking at those numbers, I think he might come close...

How many high schoolers have an iPod and a cellphone already?

I can already see it now, "Buutttt Mom, it's an iPod and a phone!" 🙄

I don't get the point of this thread...Apple shouldn't make the iPhone because high schoolers may play with it instead of paying attention? The iPhone isn't the first phone capable of using the internet. And if a student would rather use myspace than take notes, that's their own damn problem and they deserve the poor grade they'll get. I hardly see how this is Apple's problem and why it's considered a flaw. The iPhone has many flaws, and I'm not going to get into them because I've said them before, but this isn't one of them.

And to whoever said that high schools shouldn't be allowed to hold stuff until the parents pick it up, why not? If the school has rules that students can't have phones at school, and someone brings their phone to school, they're obviously in clear violation of the rules and deserve what's coming to them. If their parent works and can't come pick it up for another 2 weeks, then too bad, the student should've thought about that before breaking rules.

I guess its not the iPhones fault... actually its not.... but I dont know... i guess that we just need to get stricter school systems.... but you dont need wifi to get internet on the iPhone.......
 
I was thinking that the school can't do anything about the phone's internet since it's not the school's WiFi they'd be using, it's mobile internet like 3G or EDGE or something like that, but...

when i was in high school if u got caught using your cellphone they would take it away for the whole year. imagine the chaos if that happened with someone in high school now

Yea, until another school shooting occurs and kids start going on TV saying they tried to call the police but "someone" jammed all the cell phones 🙂

and to the OP;
Yea, because all kids who have internet access just play on myspace all day 😛

I wonder if the invention of the car lead parents to believe that all the kids were going to go around stealing them all and ensue massive amounts of damage in biblical proportions instead of going to school

Kids are going to do what they can with what they have
If they don't have anything to entertain themselves with, they will just go out and have lots of premaritals and up the teen preggo rate 🙂

Besides, it's not like high school grades really matter (well... at least it didn't in my school)
If the kid really wants to make something of himself he wont be on myspace all day, if they are really bored with high school then yea maybe they will find something to occupy their time 🙂
 
They take phones away at my school and they give you a detention (~1 hr) on your first offence and then give it back at the end of the day, and then on each offence after that they give it to your parents and you get a Saturday detention (~4 hrs).

Everyone uses their phone during the day, and I don't think that an iPhone would change that.
 
I don't think the whole "access to the Internet will facilitate cheating thing" is exclusively an Apple problem, nor is it the only way that students can cheat.

I'm fairly certain that students could utilize the built in cameras on their phones to take pictures of exam questions/answers and text them to each other.

This isn't just a problem with the iPhone. It's a problem with cell phones in High Schools, the integrity of students, and the work ethic of people in general.

I am in middle school and I already see people texting during class. I go to a private school and they confiscate and give it back at the end of the years and still people never get caught. I have a sidekick 3 and it can go on most websites without wifi.
 
see when I hear or read about student getting their cell taken up in school I feel zero sympathy for them. They broke the rules they suffer the consequences of it. Hell I could care less than the there is a double standard and the teachers are allowed to have them. I think it ok by my book. Teachers and adults have added things in their lives that would warrant a cell phone. The good ones will take only calls that they would of been page for any how by the front office. All that happening is they are skipping the middle man in the phone call.

I love reading threads here where people whine about loosing there cell because the school took it.

Also for the iPhone + HS = BAD I can agree with it on a different level and I am looking forward to reading the threads about some stupid HS here who gets their brand new iPhone stolen because they where showing it off and some kid though it was great and gets themselves a new iPhone. The iPhone is going to be a very wanted item but it well about any price most sane people would be willing to pay. Some HS going to whine to mommy and daddy and beg for one. Show it off at school and a week later have it stolen.

My responds to that is stupid kid it is your own damn fault.

Alot of kids bring laptops to school. Were aloud to use whatever we want during lunch and in-between classes. What's funny is that all the clever kids know the unlock code for the school's internet. So we can get on whatever blocked website we want.

I completely agree with this. i know tons of kids with a 60 gig ipod and they'll have like two tv shows and like 5 gigs of music. I however am stuck with my 3rd gen 10 gig when i could easily fill up a 30 and could find use for a 60 or 80.

If the parents are willing to spend their money like that for their kid, who are we to tell them not to?
