iphone/ical/google calendar sync?!

Ok I like the idea of having a push style calendar and from what I can gather syncing both my ical on my mac and iphone to google calendar will allow this. I understand a mobile me account will do this but I'm not gonna spend £60 just for push!

I've searched many forums and faq's but to no avail. When I try to sync, first of all my mac, then Iphone, nothing happens, I get an error message saying google.com is down?

Can anyone point me in the direction of an app/instructions/ or a better method...

hmm I've tried that, but when I try to create a caldav account I get an error message telling me www.google.com is down, however I can log into all google apps?

I don't have a Mac, a but I do have MobileMe, can I sync Gcal and my iPhone iCal via MobileMe?
