Yea, but that's only if you're either a) Loading/using data at the (exact) moment you're getting the phone call or b)wanting to browse the web while in a call, which doesn't work.

Well, considering that text messages are often only several bytes long, as formatting information is sent only once per conversation, unless a change is made to the text style, the chances of receiving a message at the exact instant that you would receive a call are nil. I wouldn't worry about it.

I just spoke to a co-worker who responded to the same survey and she said she was asked to rate iChat's performance over Edge, instead of WiFi. I remember being asked what percentage of Wifi vs Edge I use the most, to which I gave WiFi 75% and Edge the difference. My co-worker used a larger percentage of Edge which is why I believe the survey takes you on a different Q&A path depending on the wireless network you use most.

my response to survey

I am a little disapointed with the iphone, and really upset that it is closed to reall applications, here is my reposne to the open ended questions in the survery:
There are a few things that my old Treo can do that i am very disapointed that the iPhone can not. Some of these are due to the current closed development platform:

1. no im chat client- the web embedded stuff does not compare to Treo chat applications. This is a big deal for me. A web based application will not do it. Verichat on the Treo is just what the iphone needs.

2. no plug forward- when you plug it in special places it doesn't forward the phone line. With extra software, I can plug in my Treo at home and it will be automatically forwarded to my home phone. When I take it out o the charger it cancels that. Some Sony phones i have had also do this.

3. the you tube iclient acts like if it has not been converted to the H. standard it does not exist. I would much prefer that before google converts everythign they labled it "coming soon" not just ommitted it from serach results.

4. there is not a Mac mail like combined "inbox" you have to sort through each account. This is a lot of clicking back and forth. Software wise it shoudl be easy to just have a all mail inbox option just like Mac OSX mail.

5. will not play quicktime or any audio mail attachments. This is a big deal for me. I use ovolabs PHLink which emails me my corporate voicemails. On my treo I can listen to them. On the iphone, I can not.

6. as a bluetooth car phone the audio is not as loud as most phones

7. it was advertised as multi-threaded, but web pages do not load in the back ground. Safari's cache size does not seem editable, but is unuseably small- going one page back always seems to require a network reload. The thing has gigs of storage, but doesn't seem to care to cache

8. i am usually not someone who cares about ring tones, but the 20 there are pretty bad.

9. Google maps does not have the hybrid view

10. i like to have airline schedules on my pda- this has no off line vehicle for this. All the airlines have palm apps for schedules- the Iphone only works online with the web pages. I need to be on a plane and check schedules. The work arounds like sending the pdf as an attachment to me in mail is unusauble as the pdf schedules are 100+ pages.

11. I *hope* a menu shows up when I am overseas that lets me choose network band and select a network. In Brazil there is a phantom network that screws up my treo and I have to manually select the band and network to make it work. It will be a BIG deal if the phone does not let you select a working nework overseas.

Something my treo can not do, that I wish my iphone could do is be a skype client when on 802.11. Doing what the T-mobile service described below does would be great, but to start just being a skype client would be great.

It means SMS... Steve Jobs.. called it iChat at the keynote cuz it does look like iChat.. and y would they ask us to rate something that hasn't even been installed yet on the phone? It's SMS= iChat...

I can't imagine an iChat app for the iPhone would be hard to implement, on either connection method. I would image therefore that the reason it hasn't appeared yet is that it's tied into Leopard in some way, and will make it's debut closer to October.

Now they have to implement it! :D

Actually, no they don't... this is :apple:

I don't see why they wouldn't though. Hopefully the first software update includes a bunch of new widgets!

I was sent the survey this morning and I was asked how enjoy ichat over wifi, and then asked how i like using ichat over edge.

in case no one has encountered this, voice takes precedence over any edge communication. you can do whatever you want over edge, and if a call comes in it cuts off your edge communication and asks you if you want to take the call.

This is completely false. AT&T's own documentation proves it false, and any true test on your iPhone will prove it false. For instance, turn WiFi off to ensure you are using EDGE. Go to cnn.com (it takes a long time to load). Call your phone while it is loading and watch what happens. The line calling your iPhone will ring and ring until it goes to voicemail -- your iPhone will never ring.

For now, a web-based IM client will do

I've been using m.heysan.com for my AIM chats on the go. It lists buddies, loads quick, and supports simultaneous conversations. For me, its better than nothing.

i like heysan, but i wish it told me who was available and who wasnt

Adium

Real iChat (not just text messaging) would be awesome.

If I could reach for the clouds though it would be a multi-service Instant messaging client. (Like Adium !)

Being able to chat with Person A, while I was talking to Person B (speakerphone, handsfree set)
would be very useful.

This is correct for a Class B device. When the network receives an incoming call it checks to see if the device has an active data connection and whether data is being sent on the connection. If there is no data being sent the data connection is suspended and the call put through to the device (iPhone in this case). If however there is data being sent the network waits for a period of time to see if data flow stops and puts the call through if it does stop. Obviously if it does not stop after a period of time the call is put through to voice mail.

This is not the case for a Class A device which has separate radios for voice and data.

Based on earlier comments from Jobs I had hoped that the iPhone was a Class A device. I guess this proves it is in fact a Class B device. Also this is NOT an iPhone issue nor is it an GSM/EDGE vs 3G issue. This is how any Class B device on either GSM/EDGE or 3G works.

Q

erm . . . . . why ?

I wonder if we will see iChat for Windows? It makes complete sense. Have conversations sync with the desktop client.

Actually I can see why, but as the iPhone is NOT 3G and therefore there is no video or audio support, there is not a lot of point . . . . in any case AIM on the PC supports messaging with iChat clients.

i just got the survey in my mailbox, and ichat is no longer an option listed. interesting ... i want ichat real soon for my iphone.

You could still send feedback to Apple that this is a feature you would like to have.

Oh, and I don't think they had it on the AT&T survey I filled out either. But I kinda stuck it in on a couple of the text boxes they gave me for feedback.

i did too. i'm sure by now apple knows this is a feature that is wanted. they may have it in the next update but weren't able to finish it in time for june 29th. i do think we see an update next week as it's been nearly a month since the release.
