is it possible to get them smaller?
for instance on my 13 pro max they take 6by4 rows/columns; if they were a little smaller 1 more row could be added...

Likely it’s possible with a jailbreak.

While you cannot shrink the icon size any further you could as adopt a different workflow instead. Example 1: stuff all apps into just a few folders, then use search the quickly get to the icon and open the app.
Example 2: just like 1, but use Siri to open an app immediately
Example 3: use the App Library- usually the last home screen on iPhones to browse your apps
