Does being connected to wifi / data affect the quality of iMessage videos you receive? I have been sent a few videos recently through iMessage and they download in really bad quality on my iPhone but on my mac and iPad (that are always on wifi) the quality is fine. Is there any way to make the iPhone download the higher quality versions?

Thanks for your help!

I also am looking for a answer for this. Whatsapp on the other hand can send video without downgrading resolution over both WiFi and Cellular.

Along the same vein, why is iMessage hamstrung by carrier policies, if at all it is, when data usage is not a consideration for the user?

Go on Settings>Message>Low Quality Image mode is not turned on. I believe it may depends on the signal since I had friends sending me vids or screen recordings which a few in low quality. I had them resend it and it was clear afterward. I'm not sure what is the cause of it though. It may be the compression of the file when sending and receiving via cellular data.

I checked and the low quality mode is not turned on. I have had to do the same thing, send the video again, for the recipient to watch a better quality video.

Here's some interesting reading on Reddit...

From what I can gather, iMessage may compress photos and videos sometimes whether connected to WiFi or cellular. How iMessage determines when to compress and how much I'm not entirely sure.
Thanks for responding to the post, I would expect the any other messaging platform would do the same.

Rival messaging platform Whatsapp sends videos in good resolution whether they are sent over Wifi or cellular, and Whatsapp compresses vidoes too, but not to a point where the resolution is drastically altered.
