I think that the following features would be very useful on the iphone and they would use existing technology. I don't know why they dont have it already.

Both relate to when you have the headphones in.

1) A new voice dial command which would tell you the current time.

2) Voice Caller ID. When you are listening to music and you receive a call. the name of the caller should be read out to you. We know that the iphone can do this because it reads back the name to you when you call a contact using the voice dial. I have this feature on my old Nokia N95 and thought it was very useful.

What do people think?

That would be nice, but we need so many other things before we need stuff like that. Some file space to store documents in Word, Excel, pdf, etc. A way to edit and email those files. An even better battery. Bigger screen, IMO.

I agree about the space to store docs and editing but i don't think it needs a bigger screen. It is still a phone remember, I don't think it could get away with it being any bigger.

I would prefer voice caller id than a slightly bigger screen.

The time of day bit is just something i thought of because if im not wearing a watch im always taking the phone out of my pocket to check the time.

I can't see these changes being much work because the technology is already there.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

How about an SBSettings-like function for non-jailbroken devices? It's ridiculous that I have to go into nested sub-menus to enable/disable stuff like BT and location services, and even more ridiculous that I have to exit whatever app I'm in to do it. Apple could learn a thing or two from the JB community.

For me, the key improvement areas I like to see are:

Hardware improvements:
1) Higher resolution screen so that I can more clearly read those texts on the web pages without too much zooming ini.
2) Better resolution for the camera. Better lense. And flash for the camera.
3) Removeable battaries. Stop using this as an excuse to omit multitasking.

Software improvements:
4) True Multitasking, beyond what backgrounder is doing. I want the incoming phone call conversation to continue while my GPS is still in full view.
5) The major functions now provided by Cydia applications. iFile, SBSettings, Rotation Inhibitor, Safe mail attachment, Safari download manager, YouRtube, 3G Unrestrictor, Battery control, Boss Paper, Cyntaxt, LockDown, QuickLock, QuickScroll, Spotbright, and JumpSpring.
6) Bluetooth file transfer
7) Mail applications: A mail client that can have mailing list, that can attach any type of files from within the mail client itself. Ability to block select mails and mark them as read or unread, or for deletion.
8) Calendar: Abiilty to snooze calendar reminders. Ability to have irregular recurring patterns. Ability to make an entry to call a contact. Ability to send and invite people to meeting.
