whats the deal with iPhones in Australia...
i know one or two people who have them and use them here, but no where sells them and no phone company wants anything to do with them...

how are people using the phones?

whats the deal? does anyone know?

    thanks

My guess would be they've bought the phone in the US or had it sent to them, unlocked it and popped in a regular sim card from one of the networks here.

As kretzy says, they're not officially for sale, and probably cost a lot of money. You could get one if your really desperate, but don't expect visual voicemail to work, and if an update comes out, don't expect it not to brick your iPhone.

I'd wait to see what happens, probably a release next year, probably will Telstra even though Gil originally said he wanted nothing to do with it (not his exact words).

    is it that simple?

they're just using a telstra, vodaphone, optus... something else... one of those sim cards..

and they cant use the net and some of the iPhone features?

Pretty much. However they couldn't use a 3G sim of any kind. Internet would be available as I'm pretty sure Telstra still offer 2.5G (EDGE) here but that comes at a hefty price.

Just a side note: I was watching Rove the other night and at one stage it looked like he was playing with something resembling an iPhone...quite possibly could've been a touch.

And don't forget there's a fair bit of wifi in the metropolitan areas now, so they could always use that.
