Wow. I went to Sturgis this year and was Soooo disappointed in the At&T coverage of the area. Bunch of us out there and we couldn't communicate with each other unless we were all near a town...
Nothing to do with your question. But I do know AT&T coverage in SD back in August sucked. Had no idea about the Alltel acq from Verizon. Good luck.
Believe it or not South Dakota has about 800,000 people. I know there are many cities with more people then that, but it is nice to have some elbow room and places to go to enjoy peace and quiet. The fact that SD is sparsely populated is one of the reasons I enjoy living here.
As far as the Alltel - AT&T transaction is concerned it seems to be taking a long time to get approval for whatever reason. Some smaller cell providers are opposing some of these transactions and raising quite a stink.
I'd love to get an iPhone here once AT&T finishes the Alltel purchase, but I'm concerned about coverage out here in the wide open spaces. If they don't have a good network then I will probably switch over to Verizon. Right now in SD the CDMA network is awesome because Alltel and Verizon have a sharing agreement. There are very few places you can't get a signal even out in the sticks. Once AT&T takes over I am sure that will go away. Right now GSM coverage is provided by Alltel through a roaming agreement. GSM coverage is poor outside of city areas so AT&T is going to have to do a lot of build up if they want to compete in the rural areas with Verizon.
WOW i have to say, I was just messing around with the South Dakota ATT coverage map and the Verizon wireless map.... WOW NIGHT AND DAY!! verizon has major coverage and ATT doesn't have bup-kiss (well not much in SD)..
hopefully it gets much better for ya OP on the ATT side........
I know my coverage was pretty bad on my September trip through Nebraska, South Dakoto, eastern Wyoming and eastern Colorado. Maybe Verizon could make a map for that 🙂
I then get back to Oklahoma, and have better coverage.
