iPhone initiated ad-hoc network

Does anyone know if the iPhone SDK provides APIs for creating an ad-hoc network from the iPhone? I'm not looking for a hack... Put another way, will Apple approve and sign iPhone apps that create ad-hoc networks?

Thanks for any info that can be provided in this area.
